1 killed, 5 houses gutted in Munshiganj fire

Five houses were gutted and an elderly woman was killed in a fire at Nitira village under Arial-Baligaon union in Tongibari of the district today, police said. Twelve people were injured seriously while dousing the blaze. Locals, however, controlled the flames before the arrival of fire service personnel at the scene. Officer-in-charge of Tongibari police station Abdul Malek said the fire was originated from an electric short circuit of one Rahim Master’s house in the area and engulfed the adjacent houses. During the fire, Rahim Master’s mother Razia Begum, 90, was sleeping in the house. She died instantaneously. Valuables worth about Taka 50 lakh was damaged in the fire, police said.
Two Jamaat activist held in Sylhet

2 commit suicide in Sylhet
Two youths allegedly committed suicides by hanging themselves on Wednesday at separate places in Sylhet. The deceased were identified as Yeasin Mia, 25, son of Monjur Ali of Jaflang union of Gowinghat upazila and Sharufa Akter, 20, daughter of Abdul Hasem of Syedmugni area in the city.
Cop killed in Sirajganj road crash

A police constable was killed and four others were injured as a truck hit a police vehicle in Nalka area, to the west of Banghabandhu Bridge, under Salonda thana early Thursday morning. The deceased was identified as Moktadir,28, son of Ekabbar Ali, a resident of Godagari village of Sariaknadi upazila in Bogra district and a police constable of Sirajganj police line.Police said the accident took place in the area around 3:30 while the truck hit the patrol car of police, leaving Moktadhir dead on the spot and four others injured. The injured were identified as Raju Ahmmed, assistant sub inspector of police of Sirajganj, and three constables – Rakibul Islam, Sohel Rana and Tariqul Islam. Police recovered the body and sent it Sirajganj General Hospital.The injured were also admitted to the hospital.However, police seized the truck but the driver managed to flee away. Helel Uddin, officer-in-charge of Banghabandhu Bridge West Police Station, confirmed the incident. A case was filed in this connection.
Outlawed party leader held in Jhenidah
JHENIDAH: Police arrested an outlawed party leader from Poilanpur village in Harinakundu upazila early Friday. The arrestee was identified as Ohidul Mandal, 50, a regional leader of Biplabi Communist Party and son of Ayub Ali Mandal of Boalia village in Chuadanga district.Ershadul Kabir, officer-in-charge of Harinakundu Police Station, said acting on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Ohidul from a house in the dead of night. hidul was wanted in several cases, including for abduction, extortion and other criminal activities, said the OC. Meanwhile, police in another drive recovered a country-made firearm in an abandoned condition from a filed at Kulbaria village in the upazila on Friday morning, reports UNB.
Jubo League leader shot at in Feni
FENI: A local leader of Jubo League was shot and injured by miscreants at Bhalikia in sadar upazila on Friday night. The victim was identified as Anwar Hossain, general secretary of Motobi union unit of the youth front of the ruling Awami League. Mahabub Morshed, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said a group of miscreants opened fire on Anwar while he along with his two associates was returning home by a motorcycle around 9:30 pm, leaving him critically injured. Later he was rushed to sadar hospital. However, the reason behind the attack could not be known immediately, reports UNB.
Police arrest one for acid throwing on student
Habiganj: Police today arrested Shahraj Miah on charge of throwing acid on an examinee of this year’s SSC examination in Sadar upazila here. The victim was identified as Tahmina Akter, an examinee of this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination and daughter of late Akchhir Mia of Joyrampur village under sadar upazila in Habiganj district. Police said a group of miscreants entered the Tahmina’s house breaking fence on Wednesday and threw acid on her. On hearing Tahmina’s shouting the neigbours rushed to the house as miscreants managed to escape. The injured student was sent to Habiganj sadar hospital for treatment, but later Dr Deepankar Roy shifted her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment, repots UNB.
