Police official killed in Jessore road mishap

An official of Abhaynagar police station died in a road mishap near Akiz Jute Mills Ltd under Nawapara industrial town at around 11:30am on Saturday. The dead was identified as Mozammel Haque, 49, assistant sub-inspector, Terokhada police station, Khulna and a resident of Kushtia. Nasir Uddin, officer in-charge, Abhaynagar police station told New Nation that the police official was declared dead by the attending doctor at Abhaynagar upazila health comp complex as he was rushed there by the locals. ‘He was hit by a goods laden truck from behind while he had been going to Khulna after delivering statements at a court in Jessore,’ he OC added. No case was filed and none was attested in connection with the incident.
30 women get ‘Joyeeta Reception’ in Barisal

A total of 30 grass-root levels, including 5 in divisional level, successful women in 5 different sectors were accorded with “Joyeeta Reception” at Ashwini Kumar Hall in Barisal on Saturday. Barisal Divisional Administration organised the function with the association of ministry of women and children affairs and directorate of women affairs. Tariq-Ul-Islam, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, attended the function as the chief guest while Md. Gaus, Barisal Divisional Commissioner presided over the function. The function was also addressed, among others, by Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner, Rashida Begum, district women affairs officer of Barisal. The speakers said government has taken different initiatives to create women-friendly atmosphere in the country so that the women can play an important role for country’s socio-economic development. These women were titled Joyeeta (a Bengali word for winning women). Joyeeta Onneshone Bangladesh – a government initiative introduced in 2009 – has had a tremendous impact on the society. Grassroots women have responded well to the initiative, showing a positive indicator of women’s empowerment, they said.
Woman held with 8920 coins in Benapole
BENAPOLE: Members of Bangladesh Border Guard in a drive arrested a woman in possession of 8920 coins of Tk 1 denomination each from Putkhali border area on Saturday night. The arrestee was identified as Shirina Akhter, 35, daughter of Muntaz, a resident of Jessore rail station area of sadar upazila. Being tipped off, BGB conducted a drive in the area at night and arrested Shirina along with the coins of Tk 1 denomination each while she was in an attempt to smuggle those out of the country to India. Later the arrestee was handed over Benapole port police station. Apurbo Hasan, officer-in-charge of Benapole port police station, confirmed the incident, reports UNB.
Municipal office torched in Magura
Magura: Miscreants torched the municipal office of the district on Saturday night by pouring petrol, burning down some documents and papers. Fire service officials said miscreants stormed the district municipal office around 10pm and set it ablaze by pouring petrol. On information, a fire fighting unit rushed in and doused the blaze with half an hour of frantic efforts. Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Jahangir Alam said BNP-Jamaat activists might have torched the office for the hartal and blockade, reports UNB.
5 hurt in Kushtia clash over cricket match
Kushtia: Five people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers-both loyal to two local ruling Awami League leaders-over playing a cricket match at Pateldanghi village in Khoksa upazila on Saturday morning. Among the injured were Akkas Ali, 70, Mukta Parvin, 30, and Mizanur Rahman, 25. Police said the clash ensued as supporters of ward commissioner Amanur Rahman, also a local Awami League leader, locked into an altercation with the supporters another AL leader Fazlur Rahman over playing a cricket match on Friday afternoon.
Later a chase and counter chase took place over the issue, which left Amanur’s supporters injured. Following the clash, supporters of Amanur attacked the houses of the rival group members next morning and torched a few of them. Five people received injuries during the clash. The injured were admitted to Khoksa Upazila Health Complex. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, reports UNB.
