Youth held with Indian cigarettes in Sylhet

The Detective Branch of police seized Indian cigarette and Nasir Bidi from Chiknagul on Sylhet-Tamabil highway in Jaintapur upazila and arrested a youth on Saturday. The arrestee was identified as Jalal Uddin, 30, son of Musa Mia of Lasha Shyampur in Jaintapur. Acting on a tip-off, DB set up a check-post at Chiknagul Thakurermati village on the highway. At one stage, they seized a truck containing Indian cigarette and Nasir Bidi and detained its driver Jalal. Md Aminul Islam, additional police super of Sylhet, said there were 10 cartons of banned Nasir Bidi, 10 cartons of Peacock cigarette and 15 cartons of Jet cigarette in the truck.
Regional Math Olympiad held at SUST
The divisional round of the 11th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2019 was held at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet recently .SUST vice-chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed inaugurated the divisional round on the handball ground of the university at 9:30am as chief guest. The Olympiad was jointly organised by the Bangladesh Mathematics Association and AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation. Written session of the Olympiad was held at Academic Building C on the campus between 10:00am and 11:30am. Later in the afternoon, question-answer session and prize giving ceremony of the Olympiad were held at Mini-auditorium on the campus, the campus sources said. SUST mathematics department head Golam Ali Hayder Chowdhury chaired the prize giving session that was addressed, among others, by the university’s treasurer Anwarul Islam, ex-treasurer Elias Uddin Biswas, physical science faculty dean Sajedul Karim and Jagannath University mathematics department associate professor Mostak Ahmed. The member secretary of the divisional round of the 11th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad, Md Shah Noor told that more than 100 undergraduate students from different educational institutions of the Sylhet region participated in the divisional round.
Of them, 10 contestants were selected to participate in the final round of the Olympiad scheduled to be held at the Dhaka University on November 13, he added.
Bhurungamari declared child marriage- free upazila

The whole area of Bhurungamari upazila in Kurigram district has been declared child marriage free. Divisional Commissioner KM Tariqul Islam declared the upazila free from child marriage at a post-rally discussion arranged at the Upazila Shilpokola Academy stage in Bhurungamari upazila town recently . Bhurungamari upazila administration with assistance of RDRS Bangladesh and Plan International Bangladesh conducted motivational campaign under the Building Better Future for Girls project to turn Bhurungamari into a child marriage free upazila. Earlier, the divisional commissioner led a huge rally, with participation of 2,000 female and male students with ‘No to child marriage’ placards in their hands, teachers, officials, public representatives and civil society members, on local streets. Presided over by Bhurungamari Upazila Executive Officer Magfurul Hasan Abbasi, Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Sultana Pervin, Bhurungamari Upazila Chairman Nurunnabi Chowdhury, ASP Shawkat Ali, Dr. Aminul Islam, General Secretary of District Shilpokola Academy Rasheduzzaman Babu, Kurigram Press Club President Ahsan Habib Nilu and Director (Field Operations) of RDRS Bangladesh Humayun Khaled addressed the function.
Earlier, the divisional commissioner inaugurated the mid-day meal program and lighthouse at Bhurungamari Government Primary School and launched blood group testing camp and distributed 1,200 tree saplings among students of Bhurungamari Pilot High School ground in the upazila town.

One held with arms, ammo in C’nawabganj

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged arms trader with a pistol, two magazines and five bullets from a field at Monakasha Chowka village under Shibganj upazila of the district on Saturday night. The arrested person was identified as M Rubel Hossain, 22, son of M Dukhu of Jaminpur village of the upazila. On a tip-off, an operation team of RAB-5 conducted a raid in the area at around 8.50 pm and arrested Rubel with the arms and ammunition, a RAB official said.Later, the arrested person was handed over to the police of Shibganj police station.

Free eye camp held in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: A day-long free eye camp for the poor was held at Ballamjhar union parishad (UP) premises of Sadar upazila in the district recently . SKS Foundation, a local reputed non-government organization, organized the camp under the Prevention of Avoidable Blindness project funded by Andheri Hilfe Bonn, Germany, office sources said. A team led by Dr. Afrina Khanam, medical officer of SKS Foundation Hospital of the district town, conducted the camp. The camp treated over 300 patients with sight complaints and provided appropriate treatment with medicines. Apart from it, as many as 51 cataract patients were scrutinized to operate upon them at the hospital, sources said. UP chairman M. Jahedul Islam Jhantu formally inaugurated the camp for the poor of the union, reports BSS.
