Denmark says more Britons seek citizenship

Denmark’s immigration minister says the number of British citizens seeking Danish citizenship has more than tripled compared with 2017, the year after Britain voted to leave the European Union.
Mattias Tesfaye says that, so far in 2019, 489 British citizens have applied to obtain dual nationality. For the whole of 2017, 134 Britons applied.

UN keeps Darfur peacekeepers but hopes for their departure

The Security Council voted unanimously Thursday to keep the joint U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur for another year in hopes the new civilian-led transitional government can restore peace, and the troops can be replaced by civilians who focus on the country’s development.
The British and German-drafted resolution asks Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to provide a report to the council by Jan. 31 assessing the situation on the ground and the state of the peace process, and recommending options for a follow-on U.N. mission.

US warns Russian trolls stoking
conflict in Chile

The U.S. State Department warned on Thursday that it had seen indications of Russian “influence” on recent unrest in Chile, where two weeks of protests and riots have rocked the administration of President Sebastian Pinera.
A senior State Department official said there were “clear indications” people were taking advantage of the unrest in Chile – prompted by inequality and rising living costs – and “skewing it through the use and abuse of social media, trolling.”

Israeli drone comes under fire over Lebanon

The Israeli military said Thursday that one of its drones came under fire in Lebanese airspace. In a statement, the army said an anti-aircraft missile was “launched over Lebanese territory” toward the drone, but the aircraft was not hit.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said a large explosion was heard near the southern town of Nabatiyeh and that Israeli spy aircraft were flying overhead at the time.

The area is a stronghold of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
