UN envoy urges key nations to call for end to Libya conflict

The U.N. envoy to war-torn Libya said Wednesday he has launched “an intensive campaign” for an international conference to deliver a message that the offensive launched five months ago by a rebel commander must end.
Ghassan Salame warned the Security Council that unless key regional and international countries recognize that only a political solution can ensure Libya’s stability, “the conflict will continue.”

Political divide deepens in Thailand

A new term is gaining ground in Thailand’s political vocabulary: “Chung-Chart”, which translates roughly as “nation-hater”.
The term is used by ardent supporters of the monarchy and military to label anyone they see as a threat in a kingdom where polarisation between the ruling establishment and Thais seeking change has become even sharper after the end of junta rule this year.

Netanyahu calls for more pressure on Iran, not talks

Israel’s prime minister says now is the time to ratchet up pressure on Iran and not the time for talks, as the Islamic Republic appears poised to move further away from its commitments under the nuclear deal with world powers.
Benjamin Netanyahu says Iran’s continued violations of the deal, as well as “aggressive actions” on international shipping and attempts to stage “murderous attacks” on Israel are the impetus for more sanctions.

Russian protester given 3 years in jail for assaulting police

A Moscow court on Wednesday sentenced a protester to three years in prison for violence against a police officer, as Russia continues convictions over anti-government demonstrations. Investigators said 28-year-old Kirill Zhukov hit an officer during an unsanctioned protest at the end of July, causing him “physical pain”.

Italy’s new pro-European Cabinet sworn in

President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday swore in Italy’s new pro-European government, heralding a fresh start for the eurozone’s third largest economy as the far-right falls from power. The ministers from the anti-establishment Five Star Movement and centre-left Democratic Party raised their right hands and vowed loyalty to Italy in the 16th century Quirinale presidential palace in Rome.

30 injured as train and truck collide near Tokyo

A train and a truck collided at a crossing near Tokyo on Thursday, injuring 30 people, rescuers said.
“What we know now is 30 people were injured but we still cannot confirm further details including who they are or how serious their conditions are,” a spokesman at the local Yokohama fire department told AFP.
