School boy electrocuted

A high school student died from electrocution while he was collecting a dead katol fish floating in a big pond beside Koraliya Road in the outskirt of the town on Wednesday afternoon. He was identified as Jehadul Howlader,14, a class vii student of local Ghani Model High School and son of Idris Howlader-a resident of Jamtola area in the town. Family sources said, after school, while returning home on foot, Jehadul saw a dead Katol fish floating at the bank of the pond adjacent to Bhuiyabari in Koralia area. He went down to have it with smiles. But as soon as he went down in the pond to have the fish, he shouted loudly to save him as the pond water was already electrified because of a loose electric wire in the pond unnoticed by all. He was rescued and then rushed by the locals to Chandpur General Hospital where the on duty doctor declared him dead around 5 pm. Contacted, the school headmaster Md Abbasuddin has alleged that despite informing the local Biddut Office three days ago about a loose live electric wire, the Biddut office turned a deaf ear to it. Finally, a school boy had to die a premature death for their sheer negligence. Contacted, the Executive Engineer of the local Biddut Sale and Distribution Centre SM Iqbal had denied the complaint saying that it was a loose wire of the local power consumer. He added, they did not get any complaint about this loose wire from any body. Illegal sand lifters fined in Syedpur
RANGPUR: A mobile court here on Saturday fined four persons Taka 50,000 for lifting sand illegally from Akhira river at Janerpar point in Botlagari union of Syedpur upazila. Officials said, acting on a tip off, Assistant Commissioner (Land) for Syedpur upazila and Executive Magistrate Parimal Kumar Sarker led the mobile court in cooperation with police and local public representatives. The mobile court rounded up Jony, 30, of Janerpar and Siddik, 32, of Kanthalipara in Syedpur upazila and Sagar, 36, of Chowdhurypara and Dulal, 34, of Dighalpara in Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur. The court fined them Taka 50,000 and destroyed their sand lifting machine on the spot publicly. Later, the arrested persons were released after they paid the fined amount and gave written promise of not committing the crime anytime in future. Confirming the report, the Executive Magistrate told local reporters that similar drives would continue to stop illegal extraction of sand from the rivers to save environment, reports BSS.
