7 shops gutted in Satkhira gas cylinder blast

At least seven shops were gutted in a fire that broke out near Bhomra Land Port area here on Sunday. Local people said the fire that broke out following explosion of a gas cylinder at the shop of Azizur and spread to six other adjacent shops in the area.On information, two firefighting units went to the spot and extinguished the blaze after sometime, said Mostafizur Rahman Nasim, general secretary of Bhomra Land Port C and F agent Association.
 Pistol, drugs seized in C’nawabganj
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive seized a pistol, bullets, three magazines and 25 bottles of contraband phensidyl syrup from Raghaboti along Singnagar bordering area in Shibganj upazila on Wednesday night. A patrol team of BGB-53 challenged a man who was standing along the border with a bag around 7:30 pm, said a BGB press release. Sensing danger, the man fled the scene leaving the bag abandoned. Later, the BGB members recovered a pistol, three magazines, seven bullets and 25 bottles of phensidyl from inside the bag, reports UNB.
Water filters, wheel chair distributed in Rampal
KHULNA: Bangladesh-India friendship Power Company Limited (BIFPCL) today distributed 76 water filters to 15 schools and four colleges of Rampal upzila and 35 wheel chairs to physically challenged people at Rajnagar Union Parishad. A free medical camp for the villagers was also organised here. Mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque distributed the materials at a function with Project Director of Maitree Super Thermal Power Project (MSTPP) SC Pandey in the chair. Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat Tapan Kumar Biswas, Police Superintendent Pankaj Chandra Roy, Deputy Project Director of MSTPP Md Rezaul Karim, and former General Secretary of Khulna press Club Mallick Sudhangsu were, among others, present. The free medical camp was inaugurated by KCC mayor Khaleque. More than 300 local people got free medical advice and medicines of various diseases from the company during the daylong camp. Similar type of medical camps will be organised in other unions of Rampal. These medical camps are being organised in addition to company’s regular weekly health camps, which take place on every Saturday and Tuesday at the project site, said Anwarul Azim, Manager (Public Relation) of BIFPCL, reports BSS.
Housewife killed in road accident

One housewife was killed in Kishoreganj road accident on Monday). It is reported that, the accident took place in Kishoreganj-Bhairb Highway in Parabhanga village under Kishoreganj Sadar upazila. The woman was identified by Jannatul Ferdous Urmi (19) wife of Javed Baten of village Parabhanga, under Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila of the district. She was return to home by motorcycle. At that time a tractor collided with a motorcycle and she was spot dead. Kishoreganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique confermed this.
 Tengratila blast victims to get compensation
SUNAMGANJ: Locals, still bearing the brunt of deadly explosions at Tengratila gas field, are yet to be compensated by the concerned authorities. Two explosions rocked the area on January 7 and June 24 in 2005, destroying the gas reserve and damaging adjacent areas of Azabpur, Girisnagar, Koiyajuri, Tengrabazar and Shantipur. The location has since been abandoned but gas is still leaking in nearby villages, increasing risks of a deadly accident. Most locals still suffer from various diseases related to breathing difficulties. Tengratila Dabi Aday Songram Parishad chief Nurul Amin said: “It is impossible to recover from the damage inflicted by Canadian Company Niko. Even now, in the rainy season, gas leakage can be seen over a one kilometer area.” Niko eventually left Tengratila after securing insurance money from Singapore. Locals said none of the victims were given any compensation. Two years ago, the then state minister for power Nasrul Hamid visited the spot and promised to stand by the victims. There has been no visible government initiative to ensure that the people got damages, locals claimed, reports UNB.
