RU classes resume today

The classes of Rajshahi University (RU) will resume today (Sunday) after a 9-day long winter vacation. The vacation was from December 26 to January 3. RU public relation office administrator professor Provash Kumar Karmakar confirmed the matter. He said that all of academic activities of the university will start from today because the university was remaining off-day on Friday and Sunday. However, the residential halls have opened for the students on January 3. They have already started returning to their respective hall.
Prof Abdul Kuddus wins Natore-4 seat

AL candidate Prof Abdul Kuddus (Boat) won from Natore-4 (Baraigram-Gurudaspur) seat in the 11th parliamentary election. He got 2 lakh 86 thousand 262 votes. His nearest contester JP candidate Prof. Alauddin Mridha (Plough) got only 6 thousand 979 votes. Candidacy of BNP candidate Abdul Aziz was cancelled by a writ petition of the High Court on the 26th December. So there was no candidate of Jatiya Oikhfront led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). In this Natore-4 Seat, there were 167 vote centers and a total 3 lakh 71 thousand 755 voters.
Child drowns in Chandpur

A two – year old girl drowned in the pond adjacent to her home at Kochua Upazila Sadar on Tuesday afternoon at around 5 pm. She was identified as Fairaj Akter, 2, daughter of Omar Faruque -a resident of Patwary Bari at Nischintopur village under Kochua Upazila. While playing with her play- mates in the neighbourhood, Fairaj suddenly slipped into the pond and went missing . She drowned in the pond. After frantic search, she was spotted floating in the pond. At once, she was rescued and rushed to Kochua Health Complex where the on- duty doctor declared her dead.
Two youths held with phensidyl

Law enforcers detained two youths along with 80 bottles phensedyl from Railbazaar area in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi on early Thursday. The arrestees were identified as Sharuf Sarowar Sonet, 38, son of Sarowar Hossain and Selim Hasan, 19, son of Sadequl Islam, both of residents of Godagari Pouro area. Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Godagari model police station Jahangir Alam said that acting on a-tip off, a team of police conducted a raid in the area and arrested them along with 80 bottles phensedyl. They were involved with drug business for a long. A case was filed against them with the police station under the narcotics control act. Meanwhile, the duo was sent to jail on Thursday following a court order, the OC added.
Four including two cops held with gold bars in Jashore

Sharsha police detained two police officials and two others in charge of snatching gold bars from alleged smugglers on Wednesday noon. The arrested are assistant sub inspector Ishaq of Kalaroa police station in Satkhira and assistant sub inspector Mamun Reza of Patkelghata police station of the same district and Ashik Reza, son of police official Mamun Reza and Ashim of Dakkhindhar area of Manikgonj district. Tasmim Alam, officer in-charge, investigation, Sharsha police station told newsmen that the four were detained from Nabharan More under Sharsha police on suspicion and two gold bars were recovered from their possession while a contingent of the police were on duty at the area. The policemen, who are siblings, were trying to hide the gold bars after snatching those from the smugglers, the police official added.
