Divisional Tree Fair begins in Sylhet

A fiftin-day long Divisional tree plantation and agriculture fair began in the Sylhet with great enthusiasm on Saturday morning on the Sylhet Govt. Alia Madrasa ground. The fair was jointly organised by district administration, District Forest Department and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sylhet. On the occasion, a rally was brought out from the office premises of deputy commissioner (DC), and it ended at the same place after parading the main streets of the Sylhet City. Additional Divisional Commissioner Azom Khan inaugurated the fair as chief guest while DC Numery Jaman presided over the programme. Additional DIG Joydeb Kumar Bhodro, Additional Police Commissioner Poritus Gous, ASP Lutfur Rahaman, Seniour Journalist Aftab Chowdhury and Acting DFO AM Abubokor Siddik also spoke the programme.
Tank-lorry owners go on 24-hr strike
KHULNA: The Tank-lorry Owners’ Association went on a 24-hour strike here on Sunday in protest against the nine-point demand of students. Sheikh Forhad Hossain, secretary of the association, said no fuel will be supplied from Padma, Meghna and Jamuna oil companies in Khalispur during the period. The strike began at 8am and will continue till 8am on Monday. They called the strike as the government has decided to fulfill the nine-point demand of the protesting students, said the association leader. He said the students’ demands are contradictory, reports UNB.
RCC starts speed breaker construction
RAJSHAHI: Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has started constructing speed breakers on the busy streets in front of the educational institutions in the city aiming at freeing those from road traffic accidents. “We will construct 26 speed breakers at 13 critical points in the metropolis and we have already started the works,” said Ashraful Haque, chief engineer of RCC. He said the initiative will help to avert road accidents in front of the city’s educational institutions and the students can also cross the roads safely. “We are expecting that the construction works will be completed as soon as possible,” said Engineer Shahabuddin of the appointed contractor farm. Quality of works will be maintained, he added. Professor Taifur Rahman, Principal of Rajshahi Education Board Model School and College, appreciated the initiative. He said the road in front of his college was very risky and accident-prone. Prof Rahman expected that the speed breaker will contribute a lot towards facilitating the students to cross the road safely, reports BSS.
Sit-in program staged in Moulvibazar
MOULVIBAZAR: Different organizations of the district staged a sit-in program seeking immediate initiatives and their implementations for building embankments and re-excavating rivers in the area on Wednesday. More than 50 socio-cultural and voluntary organizations took part in the program under the banner of ‘Manu and Dholaiparer Janagosthi’ between 11am and 1 pm in front of the district’s Water Development Board. Speakers at the sit-in claimed three rivers-Kushiara, Manu and Dhalai— have lost their navigability due to a long gap in re-excavating the rivers, causing frequent floods in the regions that incurred huge losses in the four upazilas in the district and led to400,00 4 lakhs people by the flood this year. Zila Parishad Chairman Azizur Rahman, AL President of the district Nesar Ahmed, municipality mayor Md Fazlur Rahman, UP Chairman of the district sadar, Mizanur Rahman Mizan spoke on this occasion. A memorandum was put forward to the Prime Minister after the sit-in program through the district deputy commissioner., reports UNB.
