Rash Mela begins in Rangpur

A week long Rash Mela, one of the biggest festivals of the Hindu community has begun at Mahiganj Pareshnath temple premises under Rangpur city Monday afternoon. Assistant High Commissioner of India, Stationed at Rajshahi Mr. Sandip Mitra formally inaugurated the fair as chief guest while president of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), Mostafa Shohrab Chowdhury Titu, Language movement veteran Mir Anisul Haque Peyara were present as special guests. Some 30 stalls have been setup in the fair. Different kinds of handicrafts and cottage industry items, handloom products, showpieces, flower items, child toys, food items are being displayed and sold in the fair. The fair also includes various cultural progrmmes like Kirton, Rakhal and Radha dance. A large number of visitors from different religions are expected to come to the fair everyday with much enthusiasm.
Phensidyl, 66 pieces yaba seized in Dupchanchia

Members of Rapit Action Battalion (RAB) recovered 69 bottles of contraband phensidyl syrup, 66 pieces sex stimulated tablet yaba as well as one gram heroin and arrested two drug peddlers from Haphat area of Shukhangari village nearby Thana bus stand under Dupchanchia upazila of Bogra district on Sunday at about 7a.m. The arrested were identified as Imdadul Haque, 30, son of Azizar Rahman Dhokotkola village and Sohag Hossain, 22, son of Badsha Bombopara village under Dupchanchia upazila of the district. RAB sources said, on a tip-off, a team of Rapit Action Battalion conducted the raid the house of drug emperor Farid Uddin in the area and found the contraband drugs in an abandoned condition and arrested them with goods. The smugglers, Farid Uddin however, managed to escape the scene sensing the presence of the members of law enforcing agency. A case was filed in this connection with Dupchanchia police station.
4 Kgs heroin seized, one held in Benapole

Border Guard Bangladesh men on Sunday evening seized a total of 4 kilograms of heroin and arrested a youth raiding a furniture outlet at Benapole land port. The arrested is Shariful Islam Sharif, suspected heroin trader and also a resident of Gaira under Benapole port police station. Lt Col Jahangir Hossain, commanding officer, 26 Border Guard Battalion told New Nation that tipped off the BGB men seized 35 packets of heroin from hidden parts of a newly made cot at Hamid Furniture at College Road, Benapole at around 6pm on Sunday. ‘The heroin was smuggled from India,’ the BGB official added. A case was lodged with Benapole port police station in this connection.
