Nearly 19,800 children died in western India in last fiscal year

Nearly 19,800 children have died in the western Indian state of Maharashtra in the last financial year, its health minister has reportedly said.
“Some 19,799 children died in Maharashtra between April 2017 and March 2018 due to various reasons, including poor weight and respiratory illnesses,” State Health Minister Deepak Sawant was quoted by the local media as saying in a written reply to the Legislative Council last week.

Taxi shooting kills 11 in South Africa

South African police said Sunday that they are investigating a deadly shooting which lead to 11 deaths on Saturday night.
South Africa Police Service said in twitter that “Last night a taxi from GP (Gauteng Province), transporting taxi as members who attended a funeral at Ematimotolo, came under fire on R74 between Colenso & Weenen. Unknown suspects jumped into the road from the bushes and opened fire at the taxi. Several fatalities.”

18 killed in Boko Haram attack in Chad

Eighteen people have been killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram jihadists in the Lake Chad region, a Chadian military source said Sunday. “Boko Haram elements attacked a village south of Daboua,” not far from Chad’s border with Niger, at around 9:00 pm (2000 GMT) on Thursday, the military source said. The assailants “cut the throats of 18 people, wounded two others and kidnapped 10 women”.

Typhoon Ampil makes landfall in Shanghai

Ampil, the 10th typhoon this year, has made landfall on the island of Chongming in Shanghai at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, packing winds of up to 28 meters per second near its eye, the municipal meteorological observatory said.
The island, 45 km east of downtown Shanghai, is at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The Shanghai municipal flood control headquarters said it had relocated a total of 190,000 people from coastal areas by early Sunday morning.
