Peru’s SC President resigns

Peru’s Supreme Court chief justice resigned Thursday after the publication of a series of audio recordings sparked a growing scandal over the sale of sentences and influence peddling. “Given the institutional crisis that the judicial branch is going through, I present my irrevocable resignation from the post,” judge Duberli Rodriguez in a short letter published on the Supreme Court’s Twitter account.

American to be deported from Vietnam

A Vietnamese court on Friday ordered the deportation of an American student found guilty of “causing public disorder” during rare violent protests which caught the Communist authorities off-guard.
William Nguyen, 32, was taken into custody on June 10 by plainclothes police during mass protests in Ho Chi Minh City against proposed special economic zones.

Truckers begin indefinite strike in India

Indian truckers began a nationwide indefinite strike on Friday, demanding reduction of diesel and toll prices. The strike was called by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC). Truck unions claim over 9.3 million trucks are off the roads in support of the strike.
“Our demands include removal of daily pricing mechanism for diesel, toll collection and reduction in insurance premium,” a member of AIMTC said.

Eight dead as boat sinks in Missouri lake

A tourist boat capsized and sank Thursday during a fierce storm on a lake in Missouri, killing at least eight people, the local sheriff said. Another seven people were hospitalized and an unknown number were missing after the accident on Table Rock Lake, Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader told a news conference.
Divers are in the water looking for people, he said. He said 31 people had been aboard the vessel, known as a duck boat because it has wheels that allow it to ride on land as well.
