26 drug peddlers jailed in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A Mobile court on Satuday sentenced 26 drug peddlers to different jail terms on charge of taking drugs and drug trading in the district. Earlier Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested 29 persons for their alleged involvement in drug dealing. Of them, 26 were sentenced to jail from six months to one year terms each by the mobile court. The elite force arrested 29 people conducting a drive in Guripara area under Kasiadanga Police Station in Rajshahi city on Saturday. The RAB officials here today said they also seized 262 grams of ganja and some other drugs-taking instruments from their possession. Later, the arrestees were produced before the mobile court. After examining the evidences, the court sentenced 10 of them to jail for one year each and 16 others to six months each. Three other arrested persons were fined Taka500, Taka 1,000 and Taka 2,000 respectively.Saiful Islam, assistant superintendent of police working at RAB, said different courts sent more than 456 drug addicts to jail during the last 18 days, reports BSS.
Hindu Community celebrates Rath Yatra

Members of the Hindu community began celebrating one of their major religious festivals, Rath Yatra with due religious and festivity on Saturday. Thousands of Hindu devotees gathered at the selected places and joined with full enthusiasm the ritual of pulling chariots to celebrate the occasion. The biggest and the oldest journey of Jagannath Dev in Bagerhat district as well as the 2nd biggest and oldest journey of Jagannath Dev in the country was brought out from Laupala, 14 kilometers away from here on Satrday paraded the area with festive mood. Thousands of Hindu community members including female and children joined in pulling the Rath (chariot) by long ropes. The participants attired in traditional Hindu costumes beat drums and played other musical instruments and walked on the area. A large number of onlookers’ of various creeds and casts were seen witnessing the colourful Rath Yatra on both sides of the roads.
ACC arrests Rly engineer in M’bazar

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested an engineer of Bangladesh Railway’s Kulaura Section while taking bribe from an employee at the Kulaura Railway Station in the district. The detainee was identified as Mohammad Erfanur Rahman, senior assistant engineer of Railway Kulaura section. Deputy Director of ACC Habiganj coordinated district office Moloy Kumar Saha said Erfanur used to take bribe from his subordinate on a monthly basis since his posting in Kulaura five years ago. Following the information, an ACC team conducted a drive at Kulaura Railway Station around 10pm on Tuesday and caught Erfanur red-handed while he was taking Tk 10,000 as bribe from Abul Hossain, a Railway wireman, he said, adding that the engineer was handed over to Bangladesh Railway Police. Officer-in-charge of Kulaura Railway Police Station Abdul Malek said Erfanul was sent him to jail when he was produced before a court recently.
Farewell, reception to UTCs accorded in Baraigram

A programme for farewell to promoted Upazila Training Coordinator (UTC) Md Alamgir Hossain and a welcome to Upazila Training Coordinator (UTC) Md Usman Goni was held in Baraigram upazila. A meeting was held at Bonpara Model Primary School on Thursday. The meeting was also addressed among others by teacher Md Alauddin, Mahammad Ali, Abdur Razzak, school teacher Shariful Islam, Afriza Khatun and Senior Journalist Md Saifur Rahman. This meeting was conducted by teacher Md Sadek Hossain. Md Alamgir Hossain was ordered as a Program Supervisor to join in Sylhet district from Baraigram upazila and Md Usman Goni as a Upazila Training Coordinator to join in Baraigram upazila of Natore district from Bagha upazila of Rajshahi district. Md Alamgir Hossain worked as a Training Coordinator for about 3 years in Baraigram was present as a Chief Guest at the meeting.
