Robbery in Brahamaputra River in Kurigram

A robbery was committed in the Brahmaputra River at Kalabagan area of Char Bhagobatipur under Jatrapur union of Kurigram Sadar upazila at 9.30pm on Saturday.
Police and local sources said a passenger loaded engine run boat carrying 23/24 passengers including four women were crossing the Brahmaputra river towards Choddoghuri area under Nageswari upazila from Jatrapur ghat. When the boat reached at Kalabagan area of Bhagobatipur char, a group of pirates numbering 10/12 attacked on them with gunpoint and looted Tk one lack including gold ornaments and five mobile sets. They also beat up the passengers of the boat. Two passengers Lalchand and Moslem Uddin were injured.Being informed Sadar thana police rushed to the spot and recovered them and admitted to sadar Hospital.Kurigram Superintendent of police (SP)Mohammad Tobarak Ullah ensured the incident and said that a case was filed. Police is trying to arrest the criminals, he added.
3 Jamaat-Shibir men held in Jhenidah

Police arrested three Jamaat-Shibir men from Kaligonj upazila in Jhenidah due to taking preparation for demonstration on Saturday night and Sunday. Of them Ariful Hossain and Shimul Hossain have been arrested on Sunday noon while taking preparation for demonstration in Kaliganj upazila town. During demonstration they hurled brick bats at the Star Fashion cloth store of the upazila town. The front side show glass of the Star Fashion broke down, said owner Kamrul Hossain of the store. Besides, police had arrested a Jamaat activist Tahidur Rahman Tota on Saturday night from Kaliganj upazila town. Officer in charge (OC) Anwar Hossain of Kaliganj police station confirmed the matter.
Two groups of AL locked in clash, 10 inured in Jhenidah
Two groups of AL locked into clash over establishing supremacy at Kumiradah village under Shailokupa upazila of the district on Friday morning. During the clash 10 received injuries of both groups.The injured have been admitted to Shailokupa, Jhenidah and Magura hospitals. Officer in charge (OC) Sagir Mia of Shailokupa police station said, a long standing conflict over establishing supremacy had been prevailing between Abaipur UP chairman and upazila AL member Amjad Hossain and ex-Abaipur UP chairman and upazila AL member Moktar Mridha. As a sequel of the conflict on Friday morning at around 9-00 am two groups locked in to clash equipped with spear, shield and billhook.
Fake SSC examinee convicted in Morrelganj

A mobile court headed by Md Abdul Halim, Upazila Nirbahi Officer in Morrelganj of Bagerhat convicted one Rassel Hawladar (23), son of one Barek Hawladar of village Charhoglabunia under the same Upazila and sentenced him to suffer simple imprisonment for one year on the charge of his appearance in Mathematics subject in the SSC Examination Programme held in Morrelganj . A C Law Pilot High School on Friday under Open University of Bangladesh in lieu of his cousin Miraj Talukdar, son of one Hossain Ali Talukdar of village Uttar Saralia under the same Upazila. Source added that convicted Rassel Hawladar changed the photograph of his cousin Miraj Talukdar from the Admit Card and appeared in the examination from Hall No. 2 of A C Law High School Centre on Friday.
Transport strike called off in SW dists

The scheduled transport strike in the south- western region of the country was called off. Transport Owners’ Association and different transport workers association in a joint meeting took the decision on Saturday afternoon, said Azizul Alam Mintu, President, Paribahan Sangstha Sramik Samity. Pabitra Kapuria, owner of Eagle Paribahan chaired the meeting while it was attended among others by transport owners – Ali Akbar, Ashim Kundu and Iku Chowdhury, workers’ leaders Mortaza Hossain, Shaukat Ali, Rabin Adhikary Becha and concerned leaders of transport owners’ association and workers’ associations.
Former communist leader Abdus Sabur passes away
Sheikh Abdus Sabur, former communist leader, organiser of East Pakistan Students Union and also East Pakistan Communist Party- ML who joined Awami League in 90s, died at his Jessore Kazipara based residence at around 10am on Thursday. He was suffering from cancer. He was 68. He is survived by wife, two daughters and a host of relatives and well wishers. His body was buried at family graveyard in Narail after janaja prayer at Kazipara mosque in Jessore town.
