Newly married wife killed by husband in Morrelganj

Tamalika Begum (16), a newly married wife was brutally killed by her husband Manik Kazi (25) in her father’s residence in the village Jamirtala within Nishanbaria union under Morrelganj Upazila in the district in a broad daylight on Wednesday. Then the husband kept the dead body under a cot and fled away. Locals and the mother of the deceased said that Tamalika was married with Manik Kazi, son of one Rashid Kazi of village Pallymangol under adjacent Sharankhola Upazila. But just after the marriage greedy husband created pressure on her to realize dowry from her parents. As a result very often quarrel used to take place between the husband and the wife. At one stage when the quarrel took it climax Tamalika returned to her father’s residence at Jamirtala where she stayed there for one and a half months. On Tuesday husband Manik Kazi went to his father’s residence with an ill motive.
Woman killed in road accident in Magura
MAGURA: A woman was killed in a road accident on the Magura-Shalikha road near Shalikha upazila parishad here last night. The deceased was Jharna Begum, 48, wife of Advocate Kamal Hossain, organizing secretary of Zila Awami League. Police said the accident occurred when a bus hit Jharna in the area when she was crossing the road with her husband. She died on the spot. A case was filed with Shalikha thana in this connection, reports BSS.
Indian goods worth Tk50 lakh seized in Banapole
BENAPOLE: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in separate drives seized Indian goods worth Tk50 lakh in Sadipur and Amrakhali areas here early Friday. Acting on secret information that a huge amount of Indian goods were smuggled into the country through the border points, a team of BGB conducted separate drives in Sadipur and Amrakhali areas and seized Indian goods, including touchstone, wrist watches, saris, three-pieces and liquor in the early hours of Friday, said BGB-26 Battalion Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Jahangir Hossain. The market value of the seized goods was estimated at Tk50 lakh., reports UNB.
Student feared drowned in Kushtia Garai River
KUSHTIA: A college student went missing while taking bath in the Garai River near Rainweek Jogeshwar dam in the town on Thursday. The victim was identified as Sajib, 19, a 2nd year student of Kushtia Institute of Science and Technology College, and son of Dulu Mollah of Rupur village in Pabna district. Locals said Sajib along with three other friends went to take bath in the river around 2 pm. At one stage, all of them washed away by a strong current of the river. However, locals managed to rescue three of them while Sajib remain untraced. Police are trying to rescue Sajib, said Abdul Khalek, officer-in-charge of Kushita Model Police Station, reports UNB.
Charka distributed among poor women in C’nawabganj

Non-government organisation Grameen Bahumukhi Unnayan Sangstha (GBUS) has distributed 60 looms among ultra poor women of Panka and Durlavpur unions of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj recently. GBUS distributed the looms under its ‘Nadi O Jiban -2’ project with the association of Concern Worldwide funded by Irish Aid.40 ultra poor women of Panka and 20 in Durlavpur unions got the looms.
During the distribution, chairman of Panka UP Abdul Malek, convener of Char Alliance and Chapainawabganj district correspondent of Dainik Ittefaq Toslim Uddin, executive director of GBUS Tariqul Islam Tuku, other journalists, GBUS officials and local elites were present.

The arrestee was identified as Pijush Kanti Day, former vice-president of the city BCL unit.Officer in charg of Kotwoaly Police station Md. Monirul Islam said Pijush, who was expelled from the party for his anti-social activities, was wanted in a number of criminal cases.
2 listed criminals held with firearms in Laxmipur
LAXMIPUR: Police arrested two listed criminals in possession of two light guns and seven rounds of bullet from Dattapata area in Sadar upazila early Thursday. The arrestees were identified as Khorshed Alam, son of Tofael Ahmed, a resident of Dattapata village, and Azad Hossain, son of Nurul Islam, a resident of Mandari village of the same upazila. Wahiduzzaman, in-charge of Police Investigation Centre, said on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo in the dead of night. Police also recovered two light guns and seven rounds of bullet from their possession. The arrested were wanted in several cases including for murder and extortion, he said.
