CIA releases 470,000 more files from bin Laden raid

Never-before-seen video of Osama bin Laden’s son and potential successor was released Wednesday by the CIA in a trove of material recovered during the May 2011 raid that killed the al-Qaida leader at his compound in Pakistan. The video offers the first public look at Hamza bin Laden as an adult. Until now, the public has only seen childhood pictures of him.

Kenyan police kill 13 protesters

Kenyan police have killed 13 protesters in opposition strongholds since Thursday’s repeat presidential election, which the main opposition group boycotted, a local civil rights group said Wednesday. The Independent Medico Legal Unit said it recorded 64 cases of use of excessive force by police, including 34 people being shot, between Oct. 25 and Oct. 28. The rights group uses medical evidence to help victims build up cases against human rights abuses.

Canada to boost immigration to one million

Canada will boost immigration to one million over the next three years with a plan that “will guarantee” the country’s future prosperity, its immigration minister announced Wednesday.
The number of immigrants will be increased to at least 310,000 next year, and continue growing to 330,000 in 2019 and 340,000 in 2020, said Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen, who assumed office in January and is himself an immigrant.

Missing US travel-blogger family found alive

An American family missing for three days in northern Brazil was found alive Wednesday, after a drama in which they were robbed while on a boat trip.
The public safety ministry in Para state released a photo showing Adam Harris Hateau, 39, his wife Emily, 37, and their two young daughters alongside a member of the police and others in the Furo Grande area where they went missing on Sunday.

UK leader to shuffle Cabinet

Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May was expected to name a replacement for Defense Secretary Michael Fallon, who resigned late Wednesday saying his past behavior “may have fallen below the high standards” expected.
Fallon apologized after a newspaper reported that he had repeatedly touched a journalist’s knee at a function in 2002. Reports suggested that more allegations about Fallon might emerge.

Israeli jets bomb Syria arms depot

Israel’s air force bombed a weapons depot in Syria’s Homs province on Wednesday, adding to a series of strikes in recent weeks, according to a monitoring group. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was still unclear whether the depot belonged to the Syrian government or its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.
