9 ‘robbers’ held in Gazipur

Police arrested nine suspected robbers from Borjona village in Kapasia upazila on Friday. Quoting local people, police said a group of robbers, numbering 10-12 swooped on the house of Chan Mia in the dead of night and looted valuables including gold ornaments, Tk 62,000 cash and five mobile phone sets after keeping the house inmates hostages at gunpoint. Hearing a hue and cry, local people went to the spot and caught nine robbers after chasing them. Later, they were given a good thrashing and handed over to police.
Rat killing drive begins in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA:A month long rat killing drive-2017 began in the district on Wednesday with a call to protect hardly produced food grains from the rats. An inaugural ceremony organized by Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) here was also held on the occasion. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal addressed the meeting as the chief guest and district livestock officer Dr. Abdul Latif and district fisheries officer Abdud Dayan were present as the special guests. With DD of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin in the chair, the inaugural function was also addressed, among others, by president of district Krishak League Hasan Mahmud Siddique, general secretary Dipak Kumar Pal, farmer Shamsul Islam and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman while Sadar upazila agriculture officer M. Sadiqul Islam delivered an address of welcome. The speakers said rats damage around 15 lakh tonnes of food grains annually affecting production seriously and disrupting the government’s food security efforts. Terming the rat as the detrimental creature to all food crops and structures including underground electric and telephone cables, they underlined the need for involving more farmers, concerned people and adult children in this regard. Additional DD of DAE (Plant Protection) M. Matiur Rahman also presented the keynote paper at the function narrating various aspects of rat killing and urged all concerned to extend their cooperation in this connection, reports BSS.
30 fishermen jailed for catching hilsa in Faridpur
FAIRDPUR: Three mobile courts sentenced 30 fishermen to 10-day imprisonment each for catching hilsa in the Padma River defying the ongoing government ban. The drives were conducted in Nasirpur, Munshirchar of Sadarpur upazila, Akutter Char, Char Hazar Bigha in Charbhadrashan upazila and Dicrir Char and Northchannel Chair in Sadar upazila from Thursday evening till Friday morning. A mobile court led by executive magistrate Sajal Chandra Sheel conducted a drive along the Padma river in Charbhadrashan upazila and sentenced 13 fishermen to 10-day jail each for catching hilsa fish. Besides, another mobile court led by executive magistrate Mukul Kumar Moitra, conducted a drive in Sadar upazila and awarded them jail term for the same reason. Meanwhile, Hasan Hafizur Rahman, another mobile court conducted a drive in Sadarpur upazila and sentenced nine fishermen to 10-day jail. During the drived, the mobile courts also seized 160 kgs of hilsha and one lakh metre current nets. The government has imposed a ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of hilsa from October 1 to October 22, reports BSS.
Chandpur man gets life for killing wife
Chandpur: A court here has convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for killing his wife in 2012. According to the prosecution, the convict, Alamgir Hossain, 43, son of Abdul Latif of Sidla village in Haziganj upazila, hacked his wife Rabeya to death at his in-law’s house at Ubharampur village in Faridganj upazila on March 10, 2012.
Rabeya’s father, Ismail Hossain, then filed a case with Faridganj Police Station. Police submitted a chargesheet against Alamgir on April 12, 2012. After examining records and witnesses, Chandpur District and Sessions Judge Saleh Uddin Ahmed handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
