Gunmen kill Pak pro-Taliban party leader

A police officer says gunmen on a motorcycle have killed a local leader of Pakistan’s pro-Taliban Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam party in an apparent assassination in the northwest before fleeing.
Local police chief Amjad Khan says Attaullah Shah was walking home after praying at a mosque in the city of Dera Ismail Khan when the assailants opened fire early Saturday.

Storm rips through Austrian beer tent, killing two

An intense storm ripped through a beer tent in northwestern Austria, killing two people and injuring at least 40 more, Austrian media reported late on Friday.
About 700 people were in the tent erected for a local volunteer fire department festival in St. Johann am Walde, located northeast of Salzburg, when the storm hit suddenly at about 2030 GMT.

Eight stabbed in Russian city, police shoot man dead

Eight people were injured in a knife attack in the Siberian city of Surgut, the local office of the Russian law enforcement committee said in a statement published on its website.
“A man was moving along the main streets stabbing people”, it said, adding “the attacker has been killed.” “The committee is investigating attempted murder”, the spokeswoman for the committee told Reuters by phone, adding she would not comment on whether the incident was terrorism related.

Strong quake hits SE of Lambasa, Fiji

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted 254km SE of Lambasa, Fiji at 02:00:52 GMT on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said.
The epicenter, with a depth of 538.62 km, was initially determined to be at 17.9654 degrees south latitude and 178.8503 degrees west longitude.
