None arrested for vandalising idols in Jessore

None was arrested and no case was lodged with Monirampur police station for vandalising eight under construction idols at Rajbadi Durga Mandir at Malopara under Monirampur upazila over feud between two groups of the ruling party backed fishermen, Mokarram Hossian, officer in-change, Monirampur police station said. The police official termed the incident as feud over acquiring ownership of Jhanpa Baor. The incident could be taken at night. Archana Rani, a housewife of the area told that two factions of fishermen were in loggerhead over acquiring the ownership of the water body. There are two groups of the community under the banner of Sonar Bangla Matshyajibi Samabaya Samity and Jhanpa Baor Matshyajibi Samabaya Samity.
Excessive rainfall hampers vegetable farming

Excessive rainfall has heavily hampered the vegetable cultivation in different parts of Sylhet region. As a result, the price of vegetables has increased sharply in local markets. There are no vegetables which are being sold below Tk 50 per kilogram here. A total of 40 per cent more rainfall was recorded in Sylhet during last July. As per the local met office, 519mm rainfall was expected in July, but the office recorded 772mm rainfall in the month.In the current month, rainfall in Sylhet may exceed the expected target. As per the met office, the expected rainfall in August is 433mm, but it may exceed the expectation. In the last 12 days of August, the met office recorded 150mm rainfall in Sylhet .
 SUST observes International Indigenous Day
International Indigenous Day was observed at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) campus on Wednesday with a procession and a seminar. Social Work department and Association of Indigenous Students, SUST brought out separate processions and arranged seminar at noon. Teachers and students of Social Work department brought out a procession at around 10:30am from in front of their academic building and paraded the main street and ended at the same place. The department, Sachetan Nagorik Kendra, Sylhet (Sonak) and Ethnic Community Development Organization jointly arranged a seminar at department’s seminar room. On the other hand, association of indigenous students, SUST brought out another procession at around 12:30pm from in front of Central Library building and ended at the same place parading campus while teachers, students, employees, cultural and political activists participated.
Meeting on law and order held in Khulna
KHULNA: A monthly meeting on law and order of Anti Terrorism and Anarchy Committee was held on Sunday at the conference room of Khulna Deputy Commissioner (DC). The meeting has been informed that law enforcement agencies activities are continuing to resistance terrorism and militancy and mass gathering will be held in every month at union and upazila level for building awareness against terrorism and militancy.The meeting decided to launch an immediate drive against criminals, listed terrorists, extremists and militant groups to destroy their dens and to take legal action against unlicensed motorbike drivers. Three separate mobile courts have been conducted by KMP, KCC and BRTA to control illegal and unfit vehicles plying on the streets, said police and RAB officials. Narcotics Department conducted 18 mobile courts and filed 19 cases against 22 people, said officials of the department, adding that among them, six have been awarded punishment in different terms and fined Taka 15 thousand.Deputy Commissioner Nazmul Ahsan advised to exercise cultural activities at their respective clubs and urged everybody to motivate young generation for physical and sports exercise, reports BSS.
Emergency meeting on flood held
GAIBANDHA: The district disaster management committee on Sunday held an emergency meeting on the ongoing flood situation and mitigating the sufferings of the flood victims. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Goutam Chandra Pal presided over the meeting in the conference room of District Collectorate building here.In the meeting, executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board M. Mahbubur Rahman briefed on the latest situation of flood and flood control embankments in the district. He told the meeting that the rise in the water level of all the major rivers in the district-Brahmaputra, Ghagot, Teesta and Karotoa- would continue till August 18. Officials of different departments and NGOs, who work for the flood-
affected people, presented their plans and strategies in mitigating the sufferings of the flood victims.
