Nepal floods, landslides death toll rises to 49
AP, Kathmandu
Landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rain have killed at least 49 people in southern Nepal and left thousands homeless, police said Sunday.
The death toll was expected to go up, with around two dozen other people missing and feared dead after three days of heavy downpours in at least nine southern districts of the Himalayan country, said police spokesman Pushkar Karki.

Five killed in Kashmir bloodshed

Two Indian soldiers and three militants were killed in a 12-hour gunfight in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, a top police official said on Sunday.
The gunfight began on Saturday night when militants hiding inside a village opened fire on security forces, who were conducting a search in the area following a tip-off about the presence of three members of Hizbul Mujahideen – the largest of the anti-Indian Kashmiri militant groups.

Bomb kills at least 15 in Quetta

A bomb exploded near a crowded market in the Pakistani city of Quetta on Saturday, killing at least 15 people, officials said, the latest attack to hit the restive southwestern province of Baluchistan.
Middle East-based Islamic State, which has a branch of loosely affiliated fighters in Afghanistan and Pakistan, claimed the attack shortly afterwards, saying a motorcycle suicide bomber had killed 17 soldiers.

Strong quake shakes Indonesia’s Sumatra

A strong earthquake struck Sunday off the coast of southern Sumatra in Indonesia, causing panicked residents to run from their homes but no major damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake Sunday morning had a magnitude of 6.4 and occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers (21 miles).
