Venezuela quells attack on military base, two killed

Venezuelan authorities quelled an attack on a military base near the city of Valencia by soldiers and armed civilians on Sunday, killing two of them in a dramatic escalation of unrest in the protest-convulsed South American nation.
The pre-dawn raid coincided with a video circulated on social media showing more than a dozen men in military uniform announcing an uprising to restore constitutional order following the creation of a pro-government legislative superbody on Friday.

S African MPs await ruling on Zuma vote

South Africa will learn Monday if a parliamentary vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma will be by secret ballot, a move that could encourage ANC lawmakers to oust him.
Tuesday’s vote has become a test of African National Congress (ANC) unity as senior party figures have been increasingly critical of their leader, but it is unlikely to succeed in toppling Zuma.

Two jailed in Hong Kong over riot protests

Two Hong Kong men were jailed for three years on rioting charges Monday, the latest in a series of legal actions against demonstrators.
The unrest in February 2016 saw police fire warning shots in the air in the commercial district of Mong Kok as they clashed with protesters who hurled bricks torn up from pavements and set rubbish alight.

2 dead as typhoon Noru approaches Japan

Strong typhoon Noru brought heavy rain and strong winds to southwest Japan, killing two people, local officials said yesterday as they warned of landslides and floods.
A man in his 60s on the remote island of Yakushima died on Saturday after strong gusts made him fall hard and hit his head, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.
A man in his 80s on neighbouring Tanegashima island drowned on Saturday after he went to check on his boat and was swept into the water, according to the agency and the Kagoshima prefecture government.
