Youth gets 1yr in prison for proxy at HSC exam
JHENIDAH:A mobile court on Saturday sentenced a young man to one-year imprisonment for acting as proxy for another examinee in the Higher Secondary Examination (HSC) examination in a centre in Harinakunda upazila. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Manira Parvin said an invigilator caught Ariful Islam, 26, red-handed while acting as proxy for Ripon Hossain at the Govt Lalon Shah College centre. Later, Ariful was produced before the mobile court, led by Manira Parvin, also an executive magistrate, which handed down the punishment under the Public Examinations (Offences) Act 1980, reports UNB.
Man lands in jail for stalking girl

A mobile court here on Sunday sentenced a young man to one year imprisonment for stalking a girl in the district town. Police arrested Ripon Sheikh, 24, son of Abu Sheikh of Bager Bazar for disturbing the girl on her way to Shubhechha Primary School. He was later produced before a mobile court led by executive magistrate Nazim Uddin. After examining witnesses, the court sentenced Ripon to year’s imprisonment.
Baishakh sell takes momentum in Rangpur
RANGPUR: Baishakh-shopping has gained momentum in the region as the Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year, is knocking at the door. The buyers are crowding in the markets to buy clothes and other items for their families. Huge rush of the young girls, adolescents and housewives to local markets in the city has increased sales in recent days ahead of welcoming the ‘Pahela Baishakh.’ The shop owners are also happy over satisfying sales of ‘Boishakhi saree’, glass bangle, ‘punti necklace’, bands for hair bun and other goods at the shopping malls and markets. According to the market sources, hundreds of women, mostly young females, have been thronging the markets, shopping malls, ongoing month-long industry and trade fair in the city to purchase ‘Baisahkhi’ goods of their own choice. The women shoppers are mostly purchasing ‘Baishakhi’ clothes, red-bordered white ‘saree’, glass bangles , ‘punti necklace’, bands and other goods from morning to night to beautify them for making ‘Pahela Baishakh’ celebrations memorable. Talking to BSS at ‘Churi Patti’ of Nababganj Bazaar, school students Naznin, Komola and Kakoli and college students Shyamoli, Anika and Sultana said they were purchasing mostly ‘punti necklace’, hair bands and red-coloured glass bangles. Students of Begum Rokeya University Asrhukona, Farhana and Ferdousi and Akhtari of Carmichael College said they purchased red-coloured glass bangles, red-bordered white and yellow saree, ‘punti necklace’ and flower bands to wear on ‘Pahela Baishakh.’ Reports BSS.
Benapole woman held ‘with Yaba pills’

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an alleged female drug peddler along with 200 pieces Yaba tablets at Kagoj Pukur Rail Gate in Benapole recently. Tipped off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive there and arrested Mahfuza, 40, wife of Julfiker Ali of Namajgram in Benapole municipality area around 11.00am along with the Yaba pills, said senior assistant superintendent of police Khodadad Hossain of Rab-6.
Two held with liquor
Police arrested two drug peddlers along with 130 liters of liquor from Lohapatti area in the district town on Thursday night.Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive and arrested Shahid, 35 of Birampur upazila and Bappa, 25 of Railgate area of the town along with the liquor around 10 pm.A case was filed with Kotwali Police station.
