Lightning kills one in Balagonj

One person was killed by lightening in Balagong on Wednesday. The victim was identified as Masud Mia (40), Son of Zamir Ali Hussainpur Village dewan bazar Union under balagonj Upazila in the Sylhet district. His family sources said, at 11 am on Wednesday he was seriously wounded by lightening in front of his house. He was sent to Osmani Medical. On way he died.
Pahela Boishakh preparations in Khulna
KHULNA: Preparations are afoot to welcome Pahela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year 1424, on April 14 in the city and adjacent districts. Various socio-cultural organizations, including the district administration, have chalked out an elaborate programme to celebrate the festival by the people from all walks of life. The law enforcement agencies have taken additional security measures in the city and the districts for celebration of the festival in a cheerful atmosphere.
Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have taken special measures to maintain law and order during the festivity. The authorities took a decision to deploy 2500 police personnel and nearly 200 RAB members for uninterrupted celebration of the Pahela Boishakh. Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) will deploy 1500 police personnel at 50 points in the city and set up 16 check posts at different strategic places. All entry and exit points of the city will be monitored round-the-clock, KMP sources said. RAB will also deploy over 200 personnel in different strategic areas in Khulna city and district to maintain law and order, RAB sources added. Shafiqullah, additional superintendent of police of Khulna district, said they will also keep alert over 500 police personnel at important places including upazila headquarters on the occasion, reports BSS.
World Health Day observed in Natore
NATORE: The World Health Day-2017 was observed in the district today with the theme-“Depression. Let’s talk”. To mark the day, the district health department arranged a colourful rally followed by a discussion meeting. The rally starting from Natore Sadar Hospital paraded the main street of the town. Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Azizul Islam presided over the post-rally discussion. Acting Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Muniruzzaman Bhuiyan addressed the discussion at Dr. Nurul Haque Auditorium of Sadar Hospital as chief guest. President of Natore Press Club Jalal Uddin, resident medical officers of Sadar Hospital Dr. Abul Kalam Azad and Dr. Ratan Kumar Sarker also addressed the discussion, among others. Addressing the occasion, the speakers said like other countries many people in Bangladesh are suffering from mental depression, reports BSS.
Month-long sewing training course begins in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A month-long sewing training course for women began at Amshu village under Tanore upazila of the district on Thursday in order to make them self-reliant through income-generating activities. Association for Community Development (ACD) arranged the course with financial support of Palli Karma Sohayak Foundation (PKSF). Twenty-five poor and underprivileged women are taking part in the course. The initiative has been taken for boosting skilled human resources and income of marginalised and vulnerable families of the Barind tract. Tanore Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shawkat Ali, ACD Project Coordinators Mohaimenul Haque and Miraj Uddin Talukder and Branch Manager Narayan Chandra Shil addressed the inaugural session. Shawkat Ali said the government has adopted multidimensional programmes for uplifting the womenfolk, reports BSS.
Schoolboy commits suicide in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A schoolboy allegedly committed suicide at Mominpur village in Bagha upazila on Thursday. Ali Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Bagha Police Station, said Arafat Hossain, 12, a class VI student of Rustampur High School and son of Nasir Uddin, hanged himself from a mango tree after his mother scolded him for not going to school in the morning. An unnatural death case was filed in this connection, reports UNB.
