Sylhet Correspondent : A 10-day cultural festival titled ‘Manobik Sadhonay Bengal Sanskriti Utsab, Sylhet 2017’ ended in Sylhet on Friday. Bengal Foundation, an organisation patronising the Bengali culture, in association with Dhaka Bank and Channel I, organised the festival at Abul Maal Abdul Muhith Sports Complex in Sylhet city. The festival was dedicated to the memory of late Professor, scholar, academic, educator and intellectual Emeritus Abdur Razzak. The festival compound was divided into different sections and were named after Hason Raja, Radha Raman, Syed Muztaba Ali and Gurushaday Dutta to make them known to the new generation. A total of 383 musicians, dancers, painters, theatre artistes and writers from the country and 100 others from India and Nepal took part in the festival. Fourteen Bangla films were screened while four plays were staged during the event. Besides, a book fair, literary discussions, craft art fair, musical instrumental exhibition, digital display, art camp and stalls of traditional food were arranged in the festival.
A digital display on the history and heritage of Sylhet was presented while an architectural presentation held during the festival.
Two-day literary convention begins at RU
RU Correspondent : A two-day literary convention titled ‘Banglar Shahittya, Bangalir Shahittya’ begun at Rajshahi University campus on Thursday.Nirikh, a little magazine of the university organised the convention at Shaheed Sukhoranjan Teacher-student Culture Centre for the first time in its history where over hundred poets, writers, linguists and researchers from Bangladesh and India participated.Eminent writer Professor Hasan Azizul Hauqe inaugurated the convention at 9am with Nirikh president and bengali department teacher Professor Safiqunnabi Samadi in chair.RU Vice Chancellor addressed the programme as chief guest while pro-vice chancellor addressed as special guest. Addressing the programme, the speakers said that the area, period, practice and significance of Bengali literature are outstanding. The impact of the colonial rule and the connection of the World Literature-culture have not only brought changes in Bengali literature and its areas, but also in its contents and structures profoundly, they said.So it is high time that the courses of these changes including creative, intellectual research and translation in Bengali literature, is necessary to discuss deeply, they also observed. A total of forty seven articles on Bengali literature will be presented at the convention.
Kulkhati declared beggar, dowry-free
BSS, Jhalokati : Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday declared Kulkhati union of Nalchiti upazila in the district as free from beggar, dowry and child marriage. This union has overcome three main barriers on way to social progress due to socio-economic development programmes undertaken by the present government, he said. Amu was speaking at a view-exchange with the members of ‘Ekti Bari Ekti Khamar’ on Kulkhati Union Council premises of Nalchiti upazila. The minister said all the unions of the country, including Jhalokathi district, would be freed from beggar, dowry and child marriage in phases. Chaired by Kulkhati Union Council Chairman HM Akhtaruzzaman Bachu, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Jhalokathi District Council Chairman and District Awami League President Sarder M Shah Alam. The minister then distributed cheque for Taka one lakh each to two beggars of Kulkhati union.
