Two jailed, 18 fined for netting jatka in Barisal

District Fishery Department with help of river police detained 27 fishermen and seized 20 thousand meters current net from Kalabadar, Arial Kha and Meghna Rivers of the region on Monday night.The arrestees were from different areas of Hizla and Mehendiganj upazila, said additional superintendent of district river police Abdul Motaleb. Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (Hilsa), said the arrestees produced before the mobile court led by Nazmul Ahsan, executive magistrate of district administration on Tuesday.The court sentenced Munir Hossain and Mamun Haoladar to 15-month imprisonment and fined 18 others to per head Tk, 5,000. Rest 7 were released by the court.The seized thickly knotted ‘current net’ used for netting Jatka (Hilsa fry) were asked by the court to be burnt, the fishery officer told. The operation to save Jatka would be continued for increasing Hilsa resources in the country, he added.
Students demand speedy construction of BM College hostel
Agitated students of Barisal Government Brojo Mohun College on Monday noon holding agitation rally and setting fire on tier blocked the road passing in front of the campus for about an hour demanding resuming and speedy construction of the college hostel. Sohag Das, one of the organisers of the agitation programme, alleged that construction of four-storied Kobi Jibanananda Chhatrabash at the cost of Tk. 3.1 cores started in 2011. However construction work stopped since long days and even ground floor of the hall yet to be competed in last five years.Repeated prayers for speedier construction gave no result till this report except increasing the sufferings of the students, he added.In this situation students of the college bringing out a procession and holding agitation rally blocked main road passing in front of the campus by burning tier at about 11: 30 am. Police while failed to resume traffic on the road, Prof. S M Imanul Hakim, principal of the college, rushed to the spot and students engaged in altercation with him.
Wife of engineer commits suicide

Nusrat Jahan Bithi (22), wife of one Sayeedur Rahman Tuhin, an Assistant Engineer of the local Power Supply Department committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan in her bed room in her husband’s residence at Dashani within Bagerhat Pourashava area on Thursday noon. Being informed of the matter police recovered the dead body and sent it to the morgue for its autopsy. The husband hides himself after the incident. It is reported that on the day the deceased hanged herself with the ceiling fan without the knowledge of others and when was notice the other inmates recovered her and took her to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where the doctor on duty declared her dead. But the cause behind committing suicide could not be ascertained. Md. Mizanujr Rahman, Officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model PS disclosed, no complaint was lodged with the PS in connection with suicide. He added, it will be ascertained whether it is a case of suicide or homicide after the receipt of the postmortem report.
Day-labour lynched in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A day-labour has reportedly been lynched by unknown assailants in Harishpur area under Tanore upazila of the district last night, police said. The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Mozammel Haque of Boharail village under the same upazila. On information, a police team rushed to the place of occurrence and recovered the body from nearby of an irrigation deep-tubewell yesterday morning.Police sent the body to the morgue of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for post mortem. Mirja Abdus Salam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tanore Police Station, said the body was several marks of wound.
Miscreants kill driver in Jhenaidah

The miscreants in the midnight of Wednesday have killed an easy bike driver by noosing and looted his three-wheeler. The police in Sailkupa recovered the body of Ilias Hossain, 26, of Gopalpur village in Sailkupa upazila of the district. Sailkupa police station officer in charge Ttarikul Islam said, acting on information the police recovered the body from a paddy plot at Gobindapur, about three kilometers from the upazila head quarters at about 4 pm.The body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar hospital morgue for post mortem examination. The police was processing to file a case in this regard. Ilias might be killed wheen he refused to hand over his easy bike to the miscreants during the night, the police said.

Awareness raising on disability, media campaign held

A meeting on ‘Growing awareness on disability and media campaign’ was held at Daulatpur Girls High School on Thursday under the auspices of Disabled Rehabilitation and Research Association (DRRA). A M Naimur Rahman Durjoy, MP, Manikganj-1, was present in the function as the chief guest and it was presided over by Debesh Das, Representative of DRRA. Upazila Chairman of Daulatpur Tozammel Huque Toja, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shafiur Rahman, Secretary of Niketan, a Netherlands funded NGO Enoniate Thurmosweeden, Dalima Rahman,Project coordinator of DRRA among others, spoke on the occasion. The speakers urged the people to assist the disabled people to grow up them as working skilled person. The disabled are not the burden of the society and they may grow up as natural assets with the help of the people as well as the government, the speakers added. The meeting ended with a cultural function participated by the disabled persons.
