Farmer stabbed to death in Jhenidah
Jhenidah: A farmer was stabbed to death allegedly by his rivals at Dudhshar village in Shailakupa upazila early Friday. The deceased was identified as Bisharat Ali Sheikh, 60, son of Adil Uddin Sheikh of the village. Fariduddin, sub-inspector of Shailakupa Police Station, said a scuffle took place between Kader Ali, nephew of Bisharat Ali, and supporters of Shanu Joardar when Kadar Ali went to his land for picking banana sapling on Thursday morning. Later the supporters of Shanu Joarder stormed the house of Kader Ali in the evening and hit Bisharat Ali with sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital and shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 2:30 am. A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident, reports UNB.
25 sewing machines distributed in Joypurhat
JOYPURHAT: Twenty-five sewing machines were distributed on Thursday among the distressed women under the Ultra Poor Programme (UPP) aimed to make self-reliant through income generating activities. Ahead Social Organization (ASO), a non-governmental organization, distributed the sewing Machines among the 25 distressed women who completed a 30-day training provided by ASO under the financial support of European Union. A distribution ceremony was held at Baghapara branch office of ASO under Khetlal upazila of the district yesterday with ASO executive director Motiur Rahman in the chair. The programme is implementing by Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation reports BSS.
Programmes to observe Nazrul’s birthday in Khulna
KHULNA: Khulna District Administration have chalked out a two-day programme to observance 115 th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in Khulna City. A meeting of the representatives of different government and non- government organizations and socio-cultural bodies was held at the conference room of deputy commissioner on Thursday with the Deputy Commissioner Anis Mahmud in the chair. The programme will begin on May 25 at around 3pm at City’s Officers Club by placing wreaths at the potrait of poet Nazrul while a discussion titled, ‘ Contribution of Nazrul in our Liberation War,’ will be held on the first day of the two-day programme. On May 26, competition on Nazrul Sangeet and his poem recitation will be held from 3pm followed by a cultural programme, reports BSS.
Muggers loot Tk. 5 lakh in Sylhet
SYLHET: Muggers snatched away Tk5 lakh from a man after stabbing him at Shilerbhanga in Companyganj upazila on Thursday. The victim was identified as Ehia Ahmed,27, a manager of M/s Matiur and Brothers. Matiur Rahman, a rice trader and owner of M/s Matiur and Brothers, said a gang of muggers, numbering 10-12, swooped on Ehia and Liton, managers of his company, and looted Tk 5 lakh after stabbing Ehia indiscriminately while they were returning to Companyganj upazila headquarters after collecting the money around 5:00pm. Later Ehia was rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital, reports UNB.
Woman killed in train accident in Kulaura

A woman was crushed under the wheels of a train in Behala area under Chokapon railway station in Kulaura Upazila of the district on Thursday . The deceased was identified as Alima Begum, 35, wife of Kajol Miah of Bichrakandi village of the Upazila. Contacted, Md. Abdul Ahad Khan, officer-in-charge of Kulaura GRP police station confirmed the matter to The Daily New Nation. He said the accident had taken place when a Dhaka bound intercity Express train had hit her Behala area, leaving her dead on the spot while she had been crossing the railway track. Dead body transferred Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital Morgue for postmortem.
Old man dies falling from tempo

An old man (70) met his tragic end when he fell from a tempo on Bagerhat-Pirojpur Highway at Fatepur under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila on Thursday noon. He was identified as one Idris Ali of village Bhandarkhola under Kachua Upazila in the district. It is learnt from SI Humayun Kabir of Bagehat Model PS and the eye-witnesses that the tempo was coming to Bagerhat from Siughnboard bazaar and when it reached the place of occurrence the ill-fated old man tried to alight from it. But unfortunately he slipped and fell on the road.
