Newly-built pry school- cum cyclone centre eroded

A newly constructed primary School building cum cyclone centre eroded away by Tetulia River on Wednesday noon at Baherchar of Sreepur Union of Mehendiganj Upazila of the district.The school cum cyclone centre was constructed for 400 students under a two-year project and after ending construction at the cost of Tk 1.60 core it was waiting for formal inauguration. Mahabuba Hossain, headmaster of the primary school, said the school was established in 1973 when the river was more than one kilometre away. After old construction of the teen-shed school damaged severely three years ago, government started to construct another building cum cyclone centre there.
However, before handing over the newly constructed building and inauguration of that, it has been eroded away on Wednesday noon, the headmaster told.
Now we running the school in a rented house of the area, which could not the sustainable for long time and healthy environment needed for an educational institution also could not be maintainable there, headmaster Mahabuba Hossain said.
Concerned departments earlier requested several times for taking steps to prevent river erosion and save the school, but they did nothing, headmaster added.
Md. Selim, contractor of the eroded school building, said the site of construction was selected by the concerned authourity and we became bound to construct the two storied school building cum cyclone shelter at the risky point of river erosion.
Abu Sayed, Executive Engineer , Water Development Board (WDB), Barisal said six months ago a project has been sent to our headquarter for taking emergency steps to protect the area from river erosion. However we yet not received any answer from them.
Local youths and guardians of this remote village now worried that education of the rural area may be hampered due to eroding away of newly constructed school building.
Lokman Hossain, a Barisal University student of the area, said severe river erosion hit this point and eroded Sreepur Bazar, around 100 houses and about 50 acres of agricultural land in last two years.
Hossain Ali, a shopkeeper of Sreepur Bazaar, said we forced to shift our shops to avoid the erosion.
