The new executive committee of a faction of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) on Tuesday took over charge amid quarrel.
New committee president Elahi Newaj Khan Saju and general secretary Khairul Alam Bakul spoke at the installation programme held at DUJ’s office at the National Press Club in the city. The other members of the DUJ new committee were also present on the occasion.
The new committee members entered the DUJ office forcibly, as executive members of the 2014-15 committee obstructed them. At the time, a scuffle was witnessed among the members of the new committee and the committee of 2014-15.
Jahangir Alam Prodhan, general secretary of that 2014-15 committee, along with some other members asked the new committee members not to enter the office and take over the charge illegally. He said that new committee was announced illegally and its members entered the DUJ office forcibly.
The new committee was constituted without election on September 18. Elahi Newaj Khan Saju said that the committee was formed following the DUJ’s Constitution.
Saju said that the DUJ has started a new journey under the leadership of its new executive committee. “From now on, DUJ will be only forum of the journalists, not of any political party,” he said.
He vowed to merge the two factions of Dhaka Union of Journalists divided in 1993. He said that any division among the journalists couldn’t bring anything good for the community. “Unity can ensure the welfare of journalists. We believe in the unity of journalists. The process for uniting the journalists started from today,” he added.
