New Bar Council leaders to ensure lawyers` welfare

BSS, Dhaka :Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) former President and leader of pro-Awami League ‘White Panel’ in recently held Bangladesh Bar Council polls, Barrister Amirul Islam yesterday said the newly elected body is pledge-bound to fulfill the expectations of the lawyers as they have voted for a change.”Professional development and increase in other facilities for the lawyers would be ensured,” he said talking to BSS yesterday.Amirul Islam, who was elected a member in the polls, hailed the lawyers for keeping their confidence inthe White Panel and voting for a change. “We will take different steps for the welfare of lawyers. We will take initiative for regular training to improve professional efficiency of the lawyers. Moves will also be taken to expand the work area of lawyers,” he said.One of the architects of Bangladesh Constitution, Amirul Islam said the lawyers, judiciary and justices are tied with the same rope. Those could not be separated from one another, he added.”It is our constitutional pledge to ensure justice for all,” he said, adding that the judges and lawyers would have to change their attitudes in the changed situation of 21st century and enhance morality, responsibility and consciousness.The newly elected Bar Council leader observed that the existing building of Bar Council is not adequate to serve its 46,000 members. Therefore, a new place, new building and logistics are required for the Bar Council, he said.”We will adopt a national plan considering the overall situation,” he added.Pro-Awami League Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP) known as ‘White Panel’ swept the Bangladesh Bar Council polls, bagging 10 of the 14 executive member posts.The election was held on August 26 from 10 am to 5 pm.Bangladesh Bar Council is a Statutory Autonomous Body of the Government constituted under the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order, 1972.It consists of 15 members of whom the Attorney General for Bangladesh is one and is the ex-officio chairman. Others are elected by advocates for a term of three years from amongst themselves, of whom seven from general seats and seven from seven zonal or group seats.Of the elected members, one is elected vice-chairman of the Bar Council.
