New Age journo files case against 13 Ramna police

Dhaka University correspondent of the New Age filed a case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka against 13 officials of Ramna Police Station of the city for physical assault of police on him.
Magistrate Mohammad Anwar Sadat of the CMM Court recorded the depositions of the complainant Nazmul Huda Sumon, who is also a third-year student of the Political Science Department of Dhaka University, and directed the Detective Branch’s concerned Joint Commissioner to submit the investigation
report about the incident by March 10 after investigation by a police officer of the rank of an Assistant Commissioner.
The accused include Moshiur Rahman, OC (in charge of operation), Ali Hossain, OC (Investigation) and SI Mehedi Hasan Sumon.
The petition of the complainant says that while coming back to the university from the New Age office at about 5.30 pm on Sunday, he saw policemen riding a motorcycle with a pillion passenger that had recently been banned by the Government. Complainant Sumon tried to get a photograph of them on his mobile phone, which a policeman noticed.
Immediately after that about 30 policemen led by SI Mehedi Hasan Sumon of Ramna Police Station swooped on him, although he had immediately disclosed his identity to them.
The accused persons mercilessly beat the correspondent with their batons on the spot. Then he was taken in the police car, where he was beaten again. Later he was beaten once again in Ramna Police Station. The accused took away two mobile telephones and Tk 7,270, the complainant was carrying with him.
