Private sector power plants in Ctg: New 56-MW plant in Jan, another 100-MW soon

 The 56MW capacity private sector power plant that has gone into commercial operation in May this year will be formally inaugurated in January, 2015. Another 100MW private power plant will also be built soon in the port city.
The 56MW plant, Baraka Patenga Power Limited, has been constructed at Patenga in Chittagong at a cost of Tk 4 billion.
The plant has been constructed by the Non-Resident Bangladeshi entrepreneurs.
Barakatullah Electro Dynamics Limited (BEDL) has been constituted with nearly 60 NRBs back in 2008 to build up power plants in private sector in Bangladesh.
The organisation has already constructed a 51MW power plant in Sylhet in 2009 last at a cost of Tk 2.15 billion that is running now in a full swing.
The BEDL is going to build another 100MW plant in Chittagong at a cost of Tk 6.5 billion soon.
The Baraka Patenga Power Limited and Fenchuganj 51MW Power Plant in Sylhet are the sister concerns of BEDL.
Talking to a group of journalists M K Shafi Chowdhury, Director of BEDL said that their plants are now running with furnace oil.
He said, “We are trying to establish more power plants that would be run with furnace oil in Bangladesh.”The generation cost is Tk 15 per unit.
The organisation is getting facilities for importing furnace oil of 34,000 metric tonnes annually.
MK Shafi said, “BPPL is the only plant that has installed a desulphurisation unit in order to reduce the sulphur to make it environment-friendly.”
