The law enforcers on Tuesday ended the ‘Operation Rebirth’ at Dangapara in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi district. The den they cordoned off at Dangapara was used for imparting training to stimulate militant activities under the banner of Neo-JMB.
Police announced the closure of the operation after their bomb disposal unit diffused the locally made suicide vests at the militant hideout. Three suicide vests, a pistol, six bullets and a magazine were recovered from there, said M Khurshid Hossain, Deputy Inspector General (Rajshahi Range) of Police, in a press briefing on Tuesday morning.
The operation code name ‘Rebirth’ was given since the militant organizaton was trying to regroup under the banner of the neo-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (neo-JMB), the police official said.
“Sohel Mahfuz, who has been a key leader in the banned outfit for about a decade and supplied grenades to Gulshan Café attack on July 1 last year, visited the Tanore militant
den several times to impart training to his associates on Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Rajshahi region,” the DIG said. Police tracked Sohel Mahfuz several times, but failed to arrest him, he said.
“The neo-JMB leaders might have stored the explosives in the house in order to carry out subversive activities,” the DIG said.
The bomb disposal unit entered the house around 11:00pm yesterday and diffused the locally made suicide vests, said Nisharul Arif, Additional DIG of Rajshahi range.
“The suicide vests contained triacetate tripe-oxide which is highly explosive and very risky to handle. That’s why the bomb disposal unit diffused them in a room of the two-storey earthen house,” the police official said.
The recovery included about Tk 2 lakh in cash, some books, CDs and a laptop, he said.
The vests were in a cooking pot of the house some 40km from Rajshahi city.
Earlier, the law enforcers cordoned off the house of Ramjan Ali at Dangapara village under Pachandar union on Sunday night following information that Ramjan and his family members are involved in militancy.
He has been involved with JMB activities with Siddikul Islam Bangla Bhai and his son Ibrahim since 2012, the police official said.
Four members of “Neo-JMB” along with four children surrendered early Sunday after law enforcers cordoned off the house suspecting it a militant den. The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Rajshahi and Bogra police, jointly conducted the operation.
