The High Court on Tuesday observed that it would not tolerate any negligence by anybody about human life.
The High Court bench of Justice F R M Nazmul Ahasan and Justice K M Kamrul Kader made this observation during hearing on a writ petition filed seeking prevention of spraying harmful chemicals in the fruits.
Many people become sick by eating imported toxic fruits as those are not
tested properly, the court also observed. Following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), a rights organization, the High Court delivered a judgement on February 29 in 2012.
At the same time, the writ case was kept running.
Meanwhile, the court yesterday granted two more weeks time to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to submit a report on progress of implementing a HC direction to set up Chemical Testing Unit in all the sea ports and land ports of the country.
Barrister ABM Abdullah Al Bashar, Deputy Attorney General of the HC bench, confirmed the news.
The lawyer said, “In a judgement in 2012, the High Court directed the NBR to set up Chemical Laboratory Unit in all the sea and land ports of the country for testing the imported fruits. Chattogram seaport has a modern chemical laboratory to check imported fruits. Mongla and Benapole ports have also modern laboratories but no fruits are being imported through those ports right now.”
He also said, “We have submitted a report to the court on behalf of NBR. We need a reasonable time and we prayed to the court for this. The court granted two weeks time for us. Then we will inform the court about the next progress.”
Earlier on June 23 this year, the HC ordered the NBR Chairman to take appropriate initiatives to set up chemical testing unit in all the ports of the country.
Complying with the HC direction the NBR on August 25 submitted a report to the court. Subsequently, the case came into Tuesday’s cause-list of the court.
