NDP threatens to quit BNP-led alliance

A faction of the National Democratic Party (NDP) has threatened to quit BNP-led 20-party alliance if it is not run through consensus.
It also issued a 72-hour ultimatum to BNP chief Khaleda Zia to resolve a set of issues including ensuring democratic practices within the 20-party alliance.
Otherwise, the party, a component of the BNP-led alliance, will leave the combine, Alamgir Majumdar, the self-declared chairman of the faction, issued the ultimatum in a press briefing held in a hotel at Karail on Saturday morning.
Majumder also asked BNP to clarify its stance
regarding the relationship between India and Bangladesh. He however did not elaborate his comment.
He wants the opposition alliance to announce only such programme that will not cause any public sufferings.
Majumdar, at the press conference, sacked Golam Mortoza from the party’s chairman post and announced himself as the party’s new chairman.
Chariman of a faction of National People’s party (NPP), Shawkat Hossain Nilu, Labour party president Sheikh Sekander Ali, President of NAP (Bhasani), Sheikh Anwarul Haque, President of Bhasani front, Momtaj Chowdhury, Secretary general of Islami Party, M A Rashid were among others present in the briefing.
He claimed the national executive committee meeting of the party relieved its chairman Golam Murtoja and appointed Alamgir as acting chairman.
Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has convened an emergency meeting of all secretary generals of the alliance at BNP Nayapaltan office in the afternoon.
