NCT to run under directive of parliamentary body: Minister

Minister for Shipping Md. Shahjahan Khan MP said, the New Mooring Container Terminal(NCT) will be operated according to the recommendations of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry.
Besides, four private operators will be assigned for operation of 4 container berths of NCT for interim period.
The Minister told it to the journalists here during the distribution function of coloured security jackets and ID cards to the personnel of different port users working inside the port sheds.
 He said a special committee has been constituted on NCT affairs and the recommendations of the committee will be reviewed by the parliamentary standing committee on Ports & Shipping ministry.
 He also said, the NCT will be operated with the greater interest of the govt but four container berths of NCT will be operated by separate berth operators for the interim period. He also replied to journalists that following the opinions of the parliamentary committee , this decision is being taken for interim period despite opposition of the parliamentary standing committee members. Security Jacket distribution ceremony was arranged at No.4 container yard of Chittagong Port yesterday (Sunday) where the security jackets in orange, green, blue and yellow coloured jackets have been distributed among the staffs of different port users organizations engaged in the port activities.
 CPA has first ever introduced this security method from now, he added. The minister distributed the security jackets as chief guest and said security jackets wearing system is introduced in different sea ports of the world and the CPA goes ahead in security management of the port through introduction of security dress during duty hours in port sheds.
Regarding the strike of water transport workers , the services of the marine police and coast guards will be strengthened further and they will enforce activities jointly to avoid the piracy and dacoity in the vessels in inland waterways. He said the shortage of manpower in coast guard as well as number of patrol vessels will be increased at the earliest convenience.
