The country’s nationalized commercial banks failed to render desirable internet, credit cards and online money transferring service to their clients.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) sources said, the state owned banks cover 30 percent of total banking sector and 0.32 percent of total credit cards and 1.53 percent of total debit cards are issued by the banks, but internet banking operation in their branches is zero due to lack of skilled manpower.
State owned Sonali Bank (SB) has been rendering service to 1.5 crore
customers across the country. Almost all the government’s employees have their accounts with Sonali Bank. Besides, the bank operates financial transactions on behalf of central bank where there is no central bank wing. But most of the financial transitions are done by cheques as digitalization in the state owned banks is poor.
Tariqul Islam, General Manager-in-charge, told the correspondent that the branches of SB are not under Core Banking Solution (CSB).
In recent years, SB spent most of its development allocation for improving ICT system to give attention to technology based banking service after completion of CSB in entire branches of Sonali Bank, he said.
“At present we cannot provide internet banking service even if we want, but it would be possible after developing skilled employees also” Tariqul Islam said.
