National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman M Nazibur Rahman on Wednesday vowed to track down those people who are not paying taxes despite having taxable income. Failure to submit income tax return in time will result in a two percent penalty on the payable tax for each of the months a tax payable man was delayed.
“November 30 was the last day of filing tax returns. Those who failed to file returns can pray for time. The doors of NBR will remain open for taxpayers,” said the chairman at a pre-procession rally on the premises of NBR at Segunbagicha in the city marking the National Income Tax Day.
The NBR chairman said special measures were taken to create a tax-friendly environment in the country this year.
The taxpayers will not lag behind in paying taxes if a congenial atmosphere is created and rules and regulations are simplified, he added. At the beginning of last fiscal, the finance minister fixed a target of registering 3 lakh new taxpayers, but five lakh new taxpayers got registered in the first four months, he informed. He hoped that the number of income tax payers will reach 25 lakh by this year.
The NBR chairman formally inaugurated the rally. The participants marched the city streets beside Supreme Court, National Press Club and the NBR building.
Writer Anisul Huq, singer Subir Nandi, actors Ilias Kanchan, Jahid Hassan, Chanchal Chowdhury and Nobel, cricketers Akram Khan and Mustafizur Rahman took part in the rally, among others.
