Aiming to drive up turnout among young and women in paying income tax, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has amended its policy to award the longest and highest taxpayers in district level.
In previous years, the NBR awarded three highest taxpayers and two longest paying taxpayers in district level.
“From now on there will be new categories, woman and young, in the award lists,” a senior official of the NBR told the New Nation.
The Finance Ministry has issued an SRO in this connection signed by its deputy secretary Jillur Rahman.
In the previous years the NBR used to select three taxpayers in highest taxpayer category while two taxpayers in longest taxpayer category.
In the amended policy, with the highest taxpayer category there will be woman category and young taxpayer category, who will not be over 40 years.
It also amended another policy not to award every year the same person in the longest taxpaying category.
“If anyone gets the award under longest taxpayer category, that person will not be selected for the same category in the next five years,” the NBR official said.
He also said that the amendment has been made to encourage the new taxpayers for paying their taxes every year. In the previous years it was seen that same person was in the list of this category. This system will be applicable for the district level or city corporation level award.
The amended policy also said that for the highest taxpayer category one person has to be regular taxpayer for the previous three years while for the longest taxpayer category it is 15 years at least.
Regarding the disqualification of the awards it policy stated loan defaulters, non-payment of income tax, pending cases of income tax, VAT and duty, convicted in the court or declared persona non grata for any other reason.
