BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan on Wednesday said that Jamaat-e-Islami should apologise to the nation for its role in 1971during the liberation war.
“The demand has sprung for the party’s anti-liberation war role. I think Jamaat should apologise to
the nation for it,” Nazrul Islam Khan said while talking to journalists after placing a wreath at late President Ziaur Rahman’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.
He said that their party also wanted to try and to punish all the anti-liberation war criminals.
The BNP leader said, there is a demand that Jamaat should be ashamed of its anti-liberation war role and thereby should apologise for it. The demand is logical.
Nazrul Islam Khan is the coordinator of the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
He said also those who destroyed democracy in Bangladesh should also apologise to the nation.
“We think those who committed offences should apologise. We should also apologise to people if we have involvement in any wrongdoing. Unfortunately, such culture is absent in our country,” he said.
Replying to a query about the media report that Jamaat formed a committee to launch a new party, Nazrul said, it is the party’s internal matter.
Replying to another query he said, “Jamaat is still with the BNP-led 20 party alliance. Jamaat leaders have never told us that they will not want to remain with the BNP-led alliance.”
The party has the right to take its decision as to whether it would stay in the 20-party alliance, or not.
About the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda’s statement that ‘the upazila election would be a festive and competitive one’, the BNP leader commented that people had no confidence in him.
People of the country accuse him of ruining the country’s election system by his biased role. They (people) consider him as an incompetent person.
Earlier, Nazrul together with leaders and activists of the party’s one of the front bodies, Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal paid homage to Ziaur Rahman by placing a wreath at his grave, marking the 39th founding anniversary of the organisation.
