Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Ward Councillor Tarequzzaman Rajib has been expelled from Jubo League (JL) for breaching organization’s discipline.
JL General Secretary Harunur Rashid confirmed the matter to media on Sunday.
Rajib, Councillor of ward-33 under DNCC, was Joint General Secretary at Jubo League’s Dhaka north unit.
He was expelled following his arrest on Saturday night over the ongoing casino crackdown.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him from one of his friends’ home in the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area around 11:00pm on Saturday on allegations of extortion, casino business, land grabbing and other illegal activities.
Later, Rab members raided Rajib’s residence at Mohammadpur in the city.
Rajib went into hiding after the government had launched a crackdown on illegal casinos last month. A number of people were arrested on charge of extortion, contract-grabbing and running illegal gambling business.
Recently, several media outlets have run reports saying the councillor Rajib is involved in various illegal activities.
About six years ago, Rajib used to live in a small room on the ground floor of an apartment at Mohammadpur. He worked as an assistant of his carpenter father and ran a small tea stall in the area, according to the reports.
But his days changed after he joined the politics of Jubo League, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League. He was elected the ward councillor in 2014.
Currently, he owns a duplex apartment in the same area, owns several cars and assets worth crores of taka, the reports said.
The reports also said he faces multiple cases filed with different police stations.
