A daylong national workshop on Development of Curriculum Format was held at UGC auditorium on Sunday in a bid to developing a `common curriculum design’ for higher education in the country. University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and AIF sub-project of Higher Education (HEQEP) jointly organized the workshop.
Prof Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC graced the function as chief guest while Prof Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, UGC presided over the workshop. Prof Dr M Muhibur Rahman, former Member, UGC, Prof Dr Md. Mozahar Ali, GTI, BAU and Prof Dr Md. Siddiqur Rahman, former Director of IER, DU were present as resource persons of the workshop.
Prof Dr Dil Afroza Begum, Member, UGC, Dr Md. Khaled, Secretary, UGC, Dr Md. Fakhrul Islam, Joint Secretary and Directors of UGC were also present at the workshop.
Prof Abdul Mannan stressed the need for developing a unified curriculum format for tertiary level to achieve the goals of Vision 2021. He also said our curriculum is inappropriate for our graduates to compete with the knowledge and skilled graduates of the fast growing world. The present curriculum was developed about 10-15 years ago. Prof Mannan said, “We need to update our curriculum on regular basis considering the world and country’s demand.” He also emphasized on university-industry collaboration. “We have to focus on career oriented education and skills on curriculum,” he said. The UGC Chairman also suggested taking steps to develop communication and IT skills of the graduates to keep pace with the globalized world.
Prof Yousuf Ali Mollah in his speech emphasized on skilled manpower to become as a ‘developed country’ by 2021. “There is no alternative to tertiary education to realize the dream and aspirations of the nation. For this, we have to formulate the updated curriculum,’ he said.
