The whole country is prepared with heavy hearts to observe the National Mourning Day today (Wednesday) to pay tribute and show respect to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 43rd anniversary of martyrdom.
Awami League, its alliance partners and various other socio-cultural organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.
The self-confessed killers had not assassinated Bangabandhu alone, but also most of his family members on the fateful night of August 15, 1975, which is the ugliest chapter of the nation’s history.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu, escaped the planned assassination with her sister Sheikh Rehana as they were staying abroad at that time.
Talking about the security measures taken on the occasion, DMP Commissioner Md. Assaduzzaman Mia said, “‘There is no specific threat but we can’t shrug it off and the law enforcing agencies are alert to tackle any situation.”
Speaking at a press briefing in city on Tuesday, the DMP chief said, “The law enforcers have been conducting a combing operation in the city for the last one week and conducted block raids in Bashundhara, Gulshan and Dhanmondi areas of the city as precautionary measures.
The law enforcers have taken highest security measures in and around the Dhanmondi Road – 32.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are scheduled to pay homage at the Bangabandhu Memorial
Museum at Dhanmondi Road-32 around 6:30 am today.
The DMP also banned carrying of bags, sticks and inflammable things. It also urged the people to refrain from spending time by taking selfie.
Meanwhile, police have issued restriction the traffic on some streets in Dhaka on August 15 so that the people can smoothly pay their respects to Bangabandhu and other victims of the 1975 carnage on National Mourning Day.
Roadside parking will not be allowed from Russell Square to Sobhanbagh Mosque.
VVIP, VIP and top military and civil officers will have to enter Dhanmondi Road-32 through the street next to Metro Shopping Centre. They will take the same road for leaving.
Political parties, social and cultural organisations and others will have to enter Dhanmondi Road- 32 from the east and leave through the west.
The DMP commissioner asked people to follow the map with instructions for traffic on that day.
He said the restrictions would be lifted gradually when the President, the Prime Minister and other VIPs leave Dhanmondi-32 after placing wreaths on Bangabandhu’s mural there.
People will also visit the Banani Graveyard to pay their respects to the victims of the carnage at their graves.
