National Mourning Day observed

The National Mourning Day and the 39th anniversary of martyrdom of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed here with due solemnity and in a befitting manner yesterday.
In the morning, national flag was hoisted at half- mast atop all public, private and business organizations buildings.
A mammoth mourning rally participated by students, government officials and a cross section of people was brought out from the premises of deputy commissioner’s office. The rally paraded the main thoroughfares before terminating on Ambica Maidan where a big size portrait of Bangabandhu is kept.
Local Awami League leaders placed wreaths at the altar of the portrait as a mark of respect to the Father of the Nation. They also placed a wreath on behalf of Overseas Employment and Expatriate Welfare Minister Engineer Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain.
Among others, DC Sarder Sharafat Ali, Police Super Md. Jamil Hassan, Zila Parishad Administrator Zainul Abedin, Awami League Advisory Council Member SM Nurunnabi, Pourasava Mayor Shaikh Mahatab Ali Methu and a large number of organizations placed wreaths.
Quran Khwani, special prayers and doa mahfil were held at all mosques after Juma prayers and prayers at temples and churches for the salvation of the departed soul of Bangabandhu and his family members those who were killed in the small hours of August 15, 1975 by a section of disgruntled army personnel.
In the evening, a discussion meeting on the life and works of Bangabandhu will be held at local Kabi Jasimuddin hall. Overseas Employment and Expatriate Welfare Minister Engineer Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain will attend the meeting as the chief guest.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: People of Rajshahi and its adjoining districts yesterday observed the National Mourning Day and 39th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with due solemnity.
The day is being observed with a fresh vow to materialize the dreams of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build a ‘Sonar Bangla’ and to bring back the fugitive convicted killers of Bangabandhu to execute verdict of the murder case.
Various government and non-government organizations, political parties, socio-cultural organizations and educational institutions, including Rajshahi University and RUET, have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.
The day’s programms began with hoisting of national flags and black flags at half-mast, placing of wreaths at the portraits of Bangabandhu and four national leaders, offering special prayers and bringing out mourning processions.
The district administration organized a discussion meeting and Doa Mahfil at the Shilpakala Academy Auditorium in observance of the day.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, MP, addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury in the chair.
Ayen Uddin, MP, Akhtar Jahan, MP, Pro-VC of Rajshahi University Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy Shahadat Hossain, commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed, chairman of BMDA Advocate Nurul Islam Thandu, RMP Commissioner Barrister Mahbubur Rahman, DIG of Rajshahi Range Khurshid Hossain and SP of Rajshahi Alamgir Kabir spoke as special guests.
A large number of people including government and non- government officials, freedom fighters, political leaders and socio-cultural activists were present at the meeting. Local units of Bangladesh Awami League hoisted the party flags at half-mast in the morning.
At Bangabandhu Chattar (Alupatty) in the city, portrait of Father of the Nation was garlanded by various organizations including Sammilita Sangskritic Jote, district unit of Bangabandhu (BB) Parishad, BB Prokoushali Parishad, BB RUET Parishad and Ila Mitra Sangskritic Sangha.
