State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Nasrul Hamid on Saturday defended the government’s stance on subsidy and said “people’s power purchasing capacity is still below the expectable level.”

The REB organized the conference for GM of its distribution samities to gear up the route level management of the country’s large distribution agencies for implementing the target to bring cent percent household under electricity connection by 2018.
Power Secretary Dr Ahmed Kaikaus, Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossein and
REB’s member administration, among others, spoke in the function. REB Chairman Major General Moin Uddin presided over it.
Nasrul Hamid said, considering the affordability of poor people, a ‘lifeline provision’ has been introduced in the power tariff structure so that poor people can afford electricity at a comfortable tariff.
Advising the REB officials not to think about profit or loss, he asked them to be more sincere to render service to people. “Because REB was created with a core target of taking electricity to the doorsteps of the mass people in the country’s rural areas,” he said.
Underscoring the need for always behaving well with the rural electricity customers, the Minister directed the REB officials to develop a cordial relation with its consumers and to involve the local people’s representatives in their activities.
He also asked the REB officials to strengthen their efforts to reduce system loss. “If one percent system loss is decreased, it’ll save Tk 150 crore of REB,” he said.
At the conference, the REB chairman informed that his organisation had been providing electricity to 19.2 million consumers in rural areas through 80 rural power cooperatives, known as Polli Bidyut Samity (PBS).
He said, 72 percent rural people are getting electricity where system loss is 11.44 percent.
He noted that 100 percent people in 16 upazilas are getting electricity as works have been completed. Besides, 162 upazilas with get the facility by December, 2017 and 248 upazilas by December, 2018.
