Freedom fighter (FF) of Narsingdi district had a glorious role in the historic War of Liberation in 1971. The people of the district join the liberation war at the call of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
After the black night of March 25, the locals formed a Sangram Parishad led by Moslehuddin Bhuiyan. People from all walks of life including students took preparations to resist the Pakistani occupation forces and put up barricades on different roads.
On 25 March, over 3,000 rebel EPR soldiers, Ansar and police reached Narsingdi by launches. A huge quantity of arms and ammunition also reached by train. Captain Motiur Rahman received the arms. About one thousand youths and students took up arms in their hands and they started crossing border for taking training.
The Pakistani forces on April 4 and 5 carried out air attacks on different places of the district. About 200 helpless man, women and children died in indiscriminate attacks. But the killing could not dampen the spirit of the freedom loving people of Narsingdi.
The first guerilla encounter took place in Bagbari and Palbari near Madhobdi on April 14 when the Pakistani forces were trying to occupy Narsingdi by land routes. The local forces and freedom fighters resisted the invading forces.
In this encounter, Mirajuddin, Mir Imdadul Hoque Imamuddin, Abdul Mannan, Abdul Hamid, Aktar Hossain, Abul Hossain, Shamsul Huda Bacchu, Bazlur Rahman, Goas Ali Master, Ali Akbar and Motaleb Pathan played an important role.
After one day, the Pakistani forces again attacked the freedom fighters and in face of heavy bombing the freedom fighters were compelled to retreat from their position. And as a result, Pakistani forces were able to set up camps at different places of the district.
The Pakistani forces with the help of collaborators Rajakers killed a good number of people at 15 places in the six upazilas of the district.
During the nine-month war, the Pakistani forces killed many people in the district town and its adjacent areas and dumped the bodies of the victims in the river Meghna.
Narsingdi Telephone Exchange, Shoshanghat, Khatahara Bridge were the main killing spots where the occupation forces used brought abducted people to exterminate.
Besides, a number of freedom loving people were killed brutally at Shilmandhi, Tara Pukurpar and Jinerdee.
The Pakistani forces with the help of collaborators kidnapped Shoraz Kumar Adhikari, professor of Narsingdi Govt. College, and killed him brutally.
A terrible battle took place between freedom fighters and Pakistani forces at Nilkutthi beside Arial Khan river in Belabo upazila in the last week of November where 35 people including Subader Abul Bashar, Momotaz Uddin, Abdus Salam, Abdul Hoque and Abdul Bari embraced martyrdom. They were buried en mass on the bank of Arial Khan river.
Narsingdi was liberated from the occupation forces in the last battle on December 12, just four days ahead of the Victory Day. Many named and unnamed freedom fighters embraced martyrdom in the last battle.
