Bangladesh took a narrow 128-run lead against England on the second day of second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.
Right-arm spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz played the key role in demolishing England first innings and finished his superb spell as 28-2-82-6.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh made 220 in the first innings on the first day (Friday).
In reply, England scored 50 for the loss of three wickets before the first day match was called off due to rain.
Later, England were all out for 244 on the second day (Saturday).
The Tigers were at the stumps at 152 for the loss of three wickets.
Joe Root and Moeen Ali resumed the England first innings with the over-night score of 15 and two runs respectively.
England could add more 14 runs for the fourth wicket stand as Moeen Ali (10) was cleanly bowled out by Mehedi Hasan Miraz when England’s score was 64 for the loss of four wickets.
Fifth-down Ben Stokes (0) was caught by Mominul Haque off Taijul Islam when the tourists’ total was 69 for the loss of five wickets.
Then Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put on together 45 runs for the sixth wicket stand before Bairstow (24) was trapped leg before wicket by Mehedi Hasan when the visitors’ score was 114 for the loss of six wickets.
Debutante Zafar Ansari (13) was caught at the slip by Shuvagata Hom off Mehedi Hasan when England’s score was 140 for the loss of seven wickets.
After dismissal of Ansari, Joe Root could stay at the crease for a short period as Root was trapped leg before wicket by Taijul Islam when the Lions’ total was 144 for the loss of eight wickets.
Root knocked a sedate 56 from 122 balls featuring four fours.
After departure of Root, Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid salvaged their team from debacle contributing together 99 runs for the ninth wicket stand before Woakes was caught at the leg slip by Shuvagata Hom by a delivery of Mehedi Hasan Miraz when the touring side’s score was 143 for the loss of nine wickets.
Woakes made a painstaking 46 off 122 balls with four shots through the ropes.
Then Steven Finn (0) was caught behind by Mushfiqur Rahim off Taijul Islam and the visitors’ innings came to an end.
Adil Rashid remained unbeaten with 44. His 107-ball knock was studded with two fours.
Taijul Islam grabbed three wickets at the cost of 65 runs.
Later, Bangladesh made a solid start with two openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes contributed together 65 runs before Tamim was caught at the leg slip by Alastair Cook off Zafar Ansari.
Imrul Kayes remained unbeaten with 59. He hit eight fours in his unfinished 81 balls innings. Kayes fulfilled his fourth Test fifty-run land-mark using 59 balls.
One-down Mominul Haque (0) was caught by Alastair Cook off Ben Stokes when Bangladesh’s score was 66 for the loss of two wickets.
Then Mahmudullah Riyad and Imrul Kayes added 86 runs for the third wicket partnership before Riyad was cleanly bowled out by Zafar Ansari before the umpires drew the bails for the second day.
Riyad hit a polished 47 from 57 balls featuring five fours while Tamim Iqbal made a respectable 40 off 47 balls including seven fours.
Zafar Ansai bagged a pair of wickets instead of 33 runs, while Ben Stokes took one wicket for 20 runs.
