Narail Zila Parishad chairman, mayor convicted in graft case

Sohrab Hossain Biswas, Chairman, Narail Zila Parishad, Jahangir Biswas, mayor, Narail Municipality and six others were given imprisonments for several years in a graft case filed by Wazed Ali Biswas, assistant director, Anti -Corruption Commission, Jessore on August 7,2008.The verdict was pronounced on Tuesday noon.
Nitai Chandra Saha, Special Judge, Jessore, in the verdict handed down, seven years of imprisonments each to Sohrab Hossain Biswas, chairman, Narail Zila Parishad and also former joint general secretary, Narail district unit Awami League, Jahangir Biswas, mayor Narail Municipality, who is also organizing secretary of district unit Awami League and Sharful Alam Litu, Mushfiqur Rahman, Ahmad Ali Khan, Rafiqul Islam and Telayet Hossain, former ward commissioners of the municipality and Matiar Rahman, acting secretary of the municipality. The court also fined Tk 1 lakh 96,000 to the convicted. The verdict was pronounced in absence of the Zila Parishad chairman while the others were present. Confirming the information, Sirajul Islam, public prosecutor of the court informed that the convicted pocketed Tk 19, 6,000 from Rupgonj cattle market under Narail Municipality while Sohrab Hossain Biswas was chairman of Narail Municipality and the six others were commissioners of the municipality showing the land as abandoned property.
The verdict was pronounced under section 409/109 of the criminal act and section 5(2) under anti graft act. The convicted have to suffer six years more in prison in default of paying the fine, the public prosecutor added.
The convicted, except the zila parishad chairman, were sent to Jessore Central Jail in the afternoon.
