Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Saturday again requested the teachers of 37 public universities to refrain from the underway movement before the review committee’s meeting in the interest of students’ future.
“We respect the teachers. That is why the government has formed a Cabinet Committee to review the teachers’ structure. We are sincere and I call you (teachers) not to go on strike before the committee meeting,” the Minister said.
He was speaking with the reporters after an agreement signing ceremony at the LGED Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Saturday.
The agreement was signed between the Upazila
Education Officers and Secondary Education Quality and Access Enhancement Project (SEQAEP) Director Dr M Mahmudul Haque.
Bishwa Shahitya Kendra President Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education DG Prof Fahima Khatun and high officials were present.
The Minister said, “Students’ academic activities suffer for teachers’ movement. They cannot sit for examinations. The classes are not held. So, please, don’t hamper their academic activities.”
Teachers of 37 public universities across the country have been protesting against the Eighth National Pay Scale since May 14 and demanded review thereof.
They also advocated for a four-point charter of demands that included the formation of a Commission to initiate an independent pay scale for public university teachers.
The other demands of the public university teachers included salary and allowance parity between senior professors and senior secretaries and between professors and secretaries, upgrading the status of teachers in the warrant of precedence.
