Nahid for developing quality assurance mechanism for universities

Expansion of higher education has taken place in the country in terms of quantity. The main challenge of the Government is to ensure quality education. Quality education has not been ensured at its desired level. Quality education and quality research is a must to keep pace with in today’s world in the age of globalization. For this reason, there is an urgency of developing quality assurance mechanism for the universities in Bangladesh, observed Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, M.P.
Education Minister made the observation while speaking as the chief guest at a launching ceremony of Quality Assurance Mechanism in Universities at hotel WESTIN in Dhaka on Tuesday. UGC Chairman (State Minister) Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury presided over the function.
Dr Johannes Zutt, Country Director, World Bank, Bangladesh and Nepal, UGC Member Prof Dr M. Muhibur Rahman were the special guests. Md Zahangir Alam, ndc, Project Director, Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project gave the welcome address while Prof Dr Mesbahuddin Ahmed, Head of Quality Assurance Unit, UGC, introduced Quality Assurance Mechanism in Bangladesh. Prof Sanjoy Kumar Adhikary, QA Specialist, QAU, HEQEP, UGC gave the vote of thanks.
Education Minister said that the number of public and private universities has increased over the years. But quality education has not been ensured at desire at level. A well functioning quality assurance system will make significant contribution to einsure quality education and push higher education in Bangladesh forward to greater heights with peoples’ confidence at national and international level.
The chief guest stressed the need for updating knowledge and skills to compete with other counterparts in a knowledge-based society.
UGC Chairman in his presidential speech observed that universities will be better positioned through establishment of quality assurance mechanism within the universities.
UGC Members – Prof Dr Atful Hye Shibly, Prof Dr Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Prof Dr Abul Hashem, Prof Dr Md. Akhter Hossain, UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled, Vice-Chancellors and Pro Vice-Chancellors of different universities, Deans, Senior Professors and high officials of UGC and HEQEP were present on the occasion.
