Myanmar and Thailand have signed three memorandums of understanding in Nay Pyi Taw on establishing sister cities between the two countries, official sources said Friday.
The sister cities are between Kyaing Tong and Chiang Mai, between Myeik and Prachuap Kirikhan, and between Kawthoung and Ranong of the two countries.
The signing took place on the occasion of new Thai Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-o-cha’s first official visit to Myanmar which started on Thursday.
Prayuth also met Myanmar President U Thein Sein and the pair had discussions on matters related to promoting bilateral ties and trade, development of Dawei Special Economic Zone, construction of communication links among Myanmar, India and Thailand, protection of rights of Myanmar legal migrant workers in Thailand and issues of other illegal Myanmar migrant workers there as well as human resources development in energy, education, health and agriculture.
Prayuth is expected to fly to Yangon later on Friday to meet Thai investors in the former capital.
Thailand is a key trade partner of Myanmar with 5.682 billion U.S.dollars’ bilateral trade registered in 2013-14, according to Myanmar statistics. Myanmar exported 4.306 billion dollars worth of goods to Thailand, while its imports from the kingdom totaled 1.376 billion dollars during the year.
Thai statistics show that in the first three months of 2014-15, bilateral trade rose 8.73 percent to 1.7 billion dollars from the same period of 2013-14.
